Review
At the beginning of “The Watchful Eye,” a wealthy woman jumps to her death from her flat building, setting the tone for the rest of the story. We then observe the father conducting interviews with a swarm of potential babysitters for his son. Though Elena gets hired, we soon find that she has been secretly collaborating with her detective lover on illegal endeavours. One by one, we meet the various residents of the high-rise flat building, and the vast majority of them are mysterious and hard to pin down. A parallel plotline takes place in the building’s basement, and it’s both eerie and horrifying. Even if the programme gets better and more fascinating in later episodes, viewers are likely to give up after seeing the first two that the streaming service has made accessible. The aforementioned narrative is handled poorly, giving the film an air of a Spanish telenovela. When “Only Murders in the Building” and “Pretty Little Liars” are combined, a dreadful version of “The Watchful Eye” is produced. If more had been done to get rid of the soap opera vibe, the final product would have been more enjoyable. A ruby stone is mentioned in the first episode, and we learn that Elena and her detective lover Scott are on the hunt for it, but we are given no further context.
The Greybourne family, for whom Elena works as a nanny, is similarly mysterious, but we are given little information about them either. There is simply not enough information provided to form opinions regarding the characters’ morality. It is six months after Ally Ward Greybourne’s death by jumping off a building that we meet Elena, who is applying for a nanny job with the Greybourne family. Matthew, Alice’s father, is understanding of her situation, while Tory, her sister, comes out as a harsh disciplinarian. Yet there’s more going on here than meets the eye; Elena isn’t as altruistic as she seems on the surface; underneath her veneer of kind assistance is a nasty manipulator. They believe the Greybournes have concealed a precious ruby in their flat, so she and her partner have set out to find it. The basement of the building has a shady past, and Elena must venture down there in her search for the ruby stone, which has been linked to several murders and other supernatural occurrences. The bulk of the characters in ‘The Watchful Eyes’ are linked to one another and all have complaints that they wish to air. The events and circumstances are a tad far-fetched, and the horrible conversations simply add fuel to the fire.
Inexplicably, the creators failed to fully capitalise on the basement’s potential for creating a terrifying atmosphere. Mariel Molino’s portrayal of Elena, a scheming nanny, is spot-on. She acts like a nanny among her coworkers and clients, yet exhibits just the right amount of charm and attractiveness while alone with her boyfriend. Kelly Bishop’s Mrs Ivey is the show-stopping star of this show. She does a fantastic job portraying a devious and crafty resident of the building. Despite having everything necessary for an engaging presentation, “The Watchful Eyes” ultimately disappoints. Every twist and curve is there, but it hasn’t been used to its maximum potential. The end result is more analogous to a subpar television show that gets lost in the glut of content available on today’s myriad streaming services. At its finest, this thriller provides serviceable entertainment, feeling like a mashup of several other films and TV shows in the same vein.
