Three issues of Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham were released between November 2000 and January 2001 by DC Comics’ Elseworlds label. The story, co-written by Mike Mignola and Richard Pace and illustrated by Troy Nixey (pencils) and Dennis Janke (inks), with Mignola providing covers, follows a 1920s-era Batman who, after accidentally reawakening the being known as the Lurker on the Threshold, must fight against the mystical and supernatural forces that are sweeping through Gotham. In Mignola’s third narrative starring the Dark Knight, many of Batman’s allies and foes—Green Arrow, Two-Face, Ra’s al Ghul, and so on—are portrayed in a Lovecraftian style. In addition, “The Doom That Came to Sarnath,” by Lovecraft, is referenced in the story’s title. Finally, in 2015, DC issued a trade paperback collecting the whole narrative.

Review
Based on the three-issue comic book miniseries from 2001 by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola & Richard Pace, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is a Lovecraftian horror story set in an alternate reality. This episode of Batman: The Animated Series is the most out-there and terrifying of the entire series. It’s the 1920s, and Bruce Wayne (David Giuntoli; Batman: Soul of the Dragon; Grimm) is leading an expedition to Antarctica in pursuit of another one led by Professor Cobblepot. He doesn’t find the professor, but he does find mutant animals, and he brings Grendon, his zombie aide, back to Gotham with him (David Dastmalchian, Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania, Bird Box). The cult responsible for Bruce’s parents’ killings puts into motion Talia al Ghul’s (Emily O’Brien, The Bigfoot Project, Days of Our Lives) plan to revive Ra’s al Ghul (Navid Negahban, American Assassin, The Cleaning Woman). Bruce must learn the truth about his family’s fortune, Gotham’s past, and his own future in order to put a stop to it. Directed by Christopher Berkeley (Scooby-Doo and the Samurai Sword) and Sam Liu from a script by Jase Ricci, the film Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham moves quickly, perhaps too quickly.
The film’s rushed pace stems from its attempt to cram several scene pieces into its eighty-eight-minute running length without pausing for explanation or character development. Most fans already know the origins and motivations of the most prominent people of Gotham City, thus setting Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham in the main chronology of the franchise would be OK. Hence, in this example, even if the names are the same, the persons involved are not. Some actors have returned to their original roles in the canon, including Harvey Dent (Patrick Fabian, Snow Falls, Driver X). Nonetheless, certain actors, such as Kirk Langstrom (Jeffrey Combs in Holiday Hell and Re-Animator) and Dick Grayson (Jason Marsden in Young Justice and Penguin Monster Beach Party), have quite distinctive ones. There’s also a middle ground that includes Oliver Queen. Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell, Arrow) is not The Green Arrow, but he is extraordinarily competent with a bow and other mediaeval weaponry, just as Barbara Gordon is still The Oracle, but with a different understanding of the word.
It would be intriguing to find out how some of the supporting characters got to be what they are now, as some of them come off as more like narrative devices than individuals. They make an appearance, cause something to happen to them or have something happen to them, and then vanish just as fast. This is the animated depiction of what you’d get if you placed Danny Trejo or Eric Roberts in a movie for five minutes. You may say the same thing about the cult’s mythos. Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham unmistakably borrows elements from many H.P. Lovecraft works. The tragic Antarctic expedition calls to mind his novella “At the Mountains of Madness,” and his story “The Lurker at the Threshold” is also referenced in the script. There just aren’t enough details for me to care about what happens. It appears that little effort was made to condense the original comics into a single film, with all of the characters and events being shown. It’s possible that Warner’s decision to make totally CGI pictures beginning with Batman v Superman: Battle of the Super Sons is to blame for the lack of polish in the animation. Although Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is technically very well done, it lacks the charm that could have been provided by a skilled human animator.
