The wait for the sequel to DC’s The Batman might be quite lengthy. A new rumour from Variety claims that the release date for The Batman 2 won’t come until at least 2025.
Since the March 2016 premiere of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which was hailed with widespread acclaim, production on a sequel has been in full swing. Warner Bros. revealed in April that production on a sequel had begun, adding that both director Matt Reeves and actor Robert Pattinson will be reprising their roles as Batman. It’s probable that James Gunn and Peter Safran’s recent hiring as co-CEOs of DC Studios is behind the delay of the sequel. With their hiring, many other DC projects, like Batgirl and The Wonder Twins, have been delayed or cancelled.
It was feared that The Batman 2 would also be cancelled, but now that we know Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin are working on the script, we can rest assured that the sequel will be made. Matt Reeves has recently secured a contract with DC Studios, and he intends to create a new shared cinematic world, called “The Batverse,” for his next films. This will make it possible for more Batman movies and spinoffs to exist outside of the shared cinematic world that Gunn and Safran intend to create.
Reeves shared his vision for Batman’s future in an interview with The Cyber Nerds. “The Batman saga will go on forever. It’s not like crime and corruption will disappear from Gotham City any time soon. Even while I aimed to give you a satisfying “beginning, middle, and conclusion,” for the sake of the experience, I also wanted to leave you with the knowledge that Batman’s saga would continue even if I didn’t direct another film. He is destined for tragedy and yet impelled to press on toward his goal of becoming a legendary hero. It’s thrilling because if people appreciate this movie—which I think they will because Rob is fantastic—then we can make more films like it and tell more tales like that.
For fans, waiting until 2025 to watch The Batman 2 may seem like an eternity, but a three-year gap between sequels and the first film is rather typical for most large properties. Reeves will need at least one more year to complete the script, and maybe two more years to wrap up filming and post-production. It is anticipated that DC Studios and director Matt Reeves will release updates on the production of The Batman 2 when they become available. Robert Pattinson, Zo Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, and John Turturro are among the cast of Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The story follows Batman as he travels into the criminal underbelly in an effort to expose a murderer and put an end to the abuse of power that has plagued Gotham for so long.
