Margot Robbie has spoken publicly about her anticipation for the Joker sequel starring Joaquin Phoenix, in which Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn. The release date for Joker: Folie à Deux is slated for 2024, with Robbie saying it’s an honour for Gaga to perform the part she’s done in several films. According to an interview with MTV News that was published by Entertainment Weekly, Robbie said that she is “so pleased” to watch Gaga play the part of the fictional supervillain Harley Quinn. When asked about how she feels about the possibility that Gaga will be playing the character she is so well-known for, Robbie said, “It makes me so happy, because I said from the very beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters the way… like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor.” “It’s like someone gets to be Batman and someone else gets to be Macbeth,” he said.
Since the forthcoming musical will take place in another reality from the Suicide Squad movie in which Robbie starred, she says she can’t wait to see how Gaga interprets the part. Robbie continued by saying how honoured she is to have laid the groundwork for a strong female role that might be used by other actresses and performers in the future, even someone as amazing as Gaga. I feel like, in not so many situations, are there female characters—Queen Elizabeth I, but beyond that, which I got to have a stab at as well, which I was honoured to do,” Robbie remarked of the heritage of female roles and their performers. As I put it, “Wow! Actress Cate Blanchett portrayed Queen Elizabeth I. Now it’s my turn. It’s a huge compliment that I was able to establish a solid enough groundwork so that other actors may try their hands at playing Harley. She continued by saying that she believes Gaga will “achieve something spectacular” with her considerable musical and acting abilities. Robbie will reprise her role as the merry villain in upcoming films like Gotham City Sirens, having already done so in Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021).
Aside from the fact that it will have musical pieces, not much is known about Joker: Folie à Deux’ (a French word meaning “shared madness”). However, with such a title, it’s not out of the question that the film is set in Arkham Asylum and follows a plot similar to the comics, in which Quinn falls in love with her patient. Todd Phillips and Scott Silver will helm and co-write the upcoming picture.
The release date for Joker: Folie à Deux is set for October 4, 2024.
