Mike Flanagan has been an industry mainstay in the horror subgenre during the past decade. Flanagan has established himself as the undisputed master of the eerie season with his films Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil and his hit Netflix shows The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass. Flanagan and The Midnight Club’s producer, Trevor Macy, were at New York Comic Con to promote the premiere’s Netflix debut.
Amongst the buzz surrounding Midnight Club, Collider’s Therese Lacson was able to chat with the directors about their next project, the star-studded The Fall of the House of Usher, which will debut on Netflix later this year. After a long hiatus in June, fans are itching for more information about the show. Flanagan said to Lacson at NYCC, “I don’t know when it will be done, but it’s eight episodes.” Well, we’ll deliver it in probably March,” Macy said, letting us know that we may start watching the series as early as next spring.
Later, Flanagan said, “So it looks like 2019 is the year, but they haven’t decided yet. There are two possible timings: springtime or the Halloween season.” Production on the Edgar Allan Poe adaption The Fall of the House of Usher was completed in June. The plot is supposed to be a mashup of Poe’s short story of the same name and his anthology collection Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. After a short delay caused by casting Bruce Greenwood in the part initially played by Frank Langella, the production spent around six months filming in Vancouver, Canada. While both Flanagan and Macy were tight-lipped about the programme, Flanagan did tell Collider, “that show is insane,” promising audiences another complex and thought-provoking horror series from the master storyteller.
Alongside Greenwood, the cast includes Mary McDonnell and Carl Lumbly from Battlestar Galactica, Willa Fitzgerald and Malcolm Goodwin from Reacher, and Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. Carla Gugino, Rahul Kohli, Henry Thomas, T’Nia Miller, Crystal Balint, Michael Trucco, Zach Gilford, Sauriyan Sapkota, Samantha Sloyan, Katie Parker, and Kate Siegel, all of whom have worked with Flanagan before, are also in talks to star. Even though there is no confirmed release date for The Autumn of the House of Usher, Flanagan and Macy have indicated that the show would debut in the spring or fall of 2023.
