Although fans are keen to know who will succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond, the franchise’s creators have warned that the decision will take a long time. Fan-casting has suggested a number of actors who may potentially don the iconic black tuxedo, but producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have stated that they would not begin the selecting process for the next Bond until next year. Broccoli said they “haven’t begun the quest” in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. The franchise is getting a major makeover that will shape the tone of future films, but the filmmakers haven’t settled on a new direction just yet. Prior to beginning the casting process, we will be meeting to discuss the future of the Bond franchise.
In other words, we’ll give that some serious consideration early next year,” Broccoli said. In answer to a follow-up inquiry, Broccoli underlined, “No one should be waiting by the phone yet.” With the release of No Time to Die, James Bond 007 was murdered for the first time in the series history, a decision that was generally seen as a calculated effort to position the series for the future. Broccoli later dispelled rumours that the next Bond would be female, saying that while they are unsure of the personnel to replace Craig, they were certain that the next Bond would be “distinctly male and British” and will also be of “any race or ethnicity.” Lashana Lynch stepped into the Bond role after Bond’s death in the last Craig-led film, another first in the franchise’s history.
Idris Elba has also been added to the fan-casting list as a result of this news, although he doesn’t seem too excited about the prospect of becoming the next man to receive a death warrant, saying recently, “not that guy, in everyone’s world I may be.” Broccoli, the film’s producer, has stated publicly that the next James Bond will be in it for the long haul. In another interview with Empire, she elaborated on this point, saying, “When you employ an actor, you’re hoping you’re going to stay at least a decade with them and do four or five or six films with them.” Which begs the question, “What is the trajectory?” In what ways will the performer contribute? The question was, “How do you intend to change the course of the show?” Some Bond fans have taken this to suggest that a much younger actor may be cast as James Bond in the future. Broccoli also told Empire that “with [writers] Rob [Wade] and Neil [Purvis] and we’ll see where we go!” before settling on the next 007.
The franchise has opted to whet our Bond hunger with a nostalgic treat that will be streamed on Prime Video as we wait for the creative team to create the next trajectory. On October 5, in honour of the film’s 60th anniversary, the documentary The Sound of 007 will make its world premiere on Prime Video. Moreover, you can now preorder a new vinyl collection that has all the theme music.
