A new trailer for The Peripheral, Prime Video’s adaptation of William Gibson’s science fiction novel about a woman caught between two timelines, has been published. Chlo Grace Moretz plays Flynne, a lady who travels to the future and lives to see the destruction of London’s civilization 70 years from now. The preview paints Flynne as a simple suburban housewife who does menial labour on the side. Flynne gets to check out a new virtual reality (VR) helmet one day, and she’s hoping it will transport her to a gaming world where she can interact with the environment.
Unfortunately for Flynne, the virtual reality apparatus actually takes her to the year 2042, a full seventy years into the future. In the future, Flynne becomes embroiled in a sci-fi murder case, and the story will alternate between the two eras. The teaser gives us a taste of the world that Flynne will have to adapt to in the future. Huge sculptures loom over London, nameless assassins lurk in the shadows, and fantastical inventions like blast cannons and invisibility automobiles are all on display. Future technology may be more advanced, but London’s decaying skyline and maze of abandoned buildings and shadowy lanes give the impression that the city is falling apart.
If Prime Video is given the right to adapt Gibson’s cherished book, it has the potential to become a huge success in the science fiction genre. Stars like Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Gary Carr (The Deuce), Eli Goree (One Night in Miami), Louis Herthum (Westworld), JJ Feild (TURN: Washington’s Spies), T’Nia Miller (The Haunting of Bly Manor), Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders), Alexandra Billings (The Conners), Adeline Horan (The Deuce), Alex Hernandez (UnReal), Katie (Alt). Amazon Studios and Warner Bros. Television, in conjunction with Kilter Films, create The Peripheral. Scott B. Smith (A Simple Plan), Vincenzo Natali (In the Tall Grass), Greg Plageman (Person of Interest), Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy (Westworld), Athena Wickham (Westworld), and Steven Hoban (Westworld) serve as executive producers for The Peripheral (In the Tall Grass). On October 21, one episode of The Peripheral will debut on Prime Video. Starting the next Friday, December 2, fresh episodes will be accessible till Friday, December 9.
