Rian Johnson, director of 2019’s smash detective film Knives Out, has just published a new poster for the film’s highly anticipated sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which was released on Netflix today. A murder happens in the middle of a massive puzzle event, and Glass Onion stars Daniel Craig as the world-famous investigator Benoit Blanc, who must investigate a fresh set of suspects. The new billboard has Mr Blanc lounging by a pool with his bag at his feet. This is a hint at how far Mr Blanc would go to solve his next mystery; the action of the sequel to Knives Out takes place in Greece.
The latest video suggests that a large portion of the film will take place aboard a ship, where a puzzle master gathers an eclectic group to attempt to solve the most difficult conundrum he has ever devised. However, it turns out to be a deadly game, leaving Mr Blanc to investigate yet another bizarre case in which nothing is as it seems and anybody may be responsible. Stars including Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Toni Collette appeared in the original Knives Out. Craig is the sole returning cast member since Glass Onion introduces a fresh mystery for Mr Blanc to investigate. Stars like Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Edward Norton, Janelle MonĂ¡e, Leslie Odom Jr., and Kate Hudson aren’t any less abundant in the sequel Glass Onion.
The recently released teaser says that each Hollywood icon will portray a puzzle enthusiast seeking to unravel the greatest mystery ever conceived. Johnson is working on two sequels to Knives Out, the first of which is titled, Glass Onion. Johnson inked a $469 million contract with Netflix, giving the streaming service exclusive distribution rights over his successful detective franchise, which led to the creation of the sequel. That’s a lot of money, but when you consider that Knives Out made $311 million on a $40 million budget, you can see why Netflix might feel like it’s getting a leg up on the competition by signing Johnson.
Having a film like Knives Out nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 92nd Academy Awards raises the franchise’s profile and benefits any producer who decides to fund the sequels. Johnson has already completed the script for the unnamed third instalment of the Knives Out franchise. The Toronto Film Festival will take place from September 8th to the 18th, where the global premiere of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will take place. On December 23, the film will debut in limited cinemas and on Netflix throughout the world. c
