Fans of the silver screen’s greatest archaeologist will be able to get their first real look at the upcoming Indiana Jones 5 on the convention floor of this year’s D23 Expo. At least, that’s how it seems in terms of the clothes the characters will be wearing since the Indiana Jones 5 exhibit displayed not just the one we saw at the most recent Star Wars Celebration but also two more costumes from the film, along with some concept art. Naturally, Harrison Ford, reprising his role as Indiana Jones, wears the famous suit from the original film. Costume designer Joanna Johnston, who previously worked on the franchise’s costumes for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), appears to be adopting a very “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” approach to the ensemble for our hero’s fifth adventure.
The leather jacket, satchel, and famous fedora are the focal point of the booth, so if you’re at the convention this weekend, you should definitely stop by and have a look. At the convention, Indy isn’t the only one who gets to show off a new suit; we also get a glimpse at a sinister getup that seems vaguely familiar. The long black coat, the thick spectacles, and the black fedora may be a reference to Toht (Ronald Lacey), the villain who has the staff headpiece burnt into his palm in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of Lost Ark. (1981).
Given that Toht’s face was melted off when the Ark of the Covenant was opened, it’s more plausible that Mads Mikkelson would wear this suit in Indiana Jones 5, albeit his involvement hasn’t been confirmed. The third and final outfit has cowboy boots, a white shirt and slacks, and a wide-brimmed hat, and is displayed on what looks to be a female model. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), probably portrayed Helena. Since the legendary John Williams composed an original theme for Helena, which he debuted at his recent “Maestro of Movies” concert at the Hollywood Bowl, she is widely anticipated to play a significant supporting role in the film.
The 30th of June, 2023, will mark the premiere of Indiana Jones 5.
