Decades after Tyler Perry had the concept for A Jazzman’s Blues, the film will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. In anticipation of the film’s international debut at TIFF, Perry has posted images of the film’s principal cast on social media, praising their work. The renowned director published four production stills from the film on Twitter, focusing on the film’s two novice protagonists, actors Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer. “Meet Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer, who are the leads in this wonderful cast,” Perry wrote. Boone plays Bayou, the female half of an interracial couple who, despite social and familial pressures, are determined to marry and start a family together.
In the heartfelt teaser published by Netflix last week, Boone is shown to be more than just a guy in love; he is also a jazz musician who uses his own romantic history to inspire his music. In two of the photos, he is shown using this fantastic machine. Pfeiffer plays Leanne, who has yanked away from her boyfriend Boone and forced to have a difficult confrontation with her mother, who insists that she marry a guy of her choosing. Even though the trailer demonstrates strong chemistry between the protagonists, Perry had a tough time finding the right people to play them and the other roles in the film. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Perry discussed how talks with up-and-coming actors for casting roles in the film were going well and they “were really excited” about it until it “just fell apart.” Perry went on to explain that this was due to his “not-so-great relationship with the critics of my films,” who seem to deter young actors from jumping on his project due to the poor critical ratings on his Madea films, which regularly flop at the box office.
Perry eventually convinced Boone to join the cast of A Jazzman’s Blues. Boone had been hesitant at first, but after reading the screenplay, he realised this was his chance to work with Perry, whose films he had stated “to a degree, raised me,” and to be a part of “a story of impact.” Perry serves as writer, director, and producer for the 1940s-set historical romance A Jazzman’s Blues, which also features Brent Antonello, Brad Benedict, Ryan Eggold, Milauna Jemai Jackson, Kario Marcel, Austin Scott, Amirah Vann, Rob Wood, and Lana Young. On September 23rd, you may see A Jazzman’s Blues on Netflix.
