Finally, Laverne Cox and George Wallace can break out the champagne since Amazon Freevee has ordered many seasons of their comedy series, Clean Slate. Since its first planned premiere on NBCUniversal in January 2020, the project has been bouncing around between networks. Now that Sony Pictures Television and Act III Productions, headed by Norman Lear, have signed on as backers, the cast and crew can start to work. Henry (Wallace), the protagonist of Clean Slate, is a car wash proprietor who longs for simpler times but yet manages to keep his loyal clientele more than pleased with the quality of his job despite his grumpy disposition.
Henry is in for the shock of his life when he learns that his long-lost son or daughter is planning to move back to Alabama after being away for over two decades. The two parted ways on a sour note, but Henry is relieved that his child has come to their senses and is moving back in with him. When Henry’s daughter returns as a confident, goal-oriented trans woman called Desiree, he will find that the reunion will be a learning process for both of them (Cox).
They work to mend their ties together, and Henry picks up a few lessons about himself in the process. Cox’s career has taken off in the last decade since she first gained widespread attention in Orange is the New Black on Netflix. Cox has received a number of honours for her work raising transgender awareness. In the past 12 months, she has acted in the action comedy film Jolt and the Netflix true-crime drama series Inventing Anna. Uglies, directed by McG and released on Netflix, stars the Promising Young Woman star with Joey King, Keith Powers, Brianne Tju, & Chase Stokes, and is the latest dystopian fantasy film to feature a young actress. Wallace has been one of the most famous comedians for decades.
The actor has had a long and distinguished career, with notable film roles in films as diverse as the Coen Brothers’ The Ladykillers and Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever. Wallace most recently appeared in Hubie Halloween, a Netflix comedy written and directed by Steven Brill. In addition to their acting roles, Cox and Wallace co-wrote the script with director Dan Ewen. As a precursor to the tone of Clean Slate, Ewen co-wrote the screenplay for the 2019 John Cena, Keegan Michael-Key, & John Leguizamo family comedy Playing with Fire. Along with Act III’s Lear & Brent Miller, Ewen and Cox serve as executive producers. Producing duties will be shared by Wallace and Paul Hilepo. A date for the release of Clean Slate has not yet been announced.
