In the new red-rated teaser for Medieval, Ben Foster displays a lot of blood and violence. In the latest epic from the studio The Avenue, Foster plays the title role of the legendary warrior Jan ika, who is entrusted with rescuing Lord Rosenberg’s (Til Schweiger) fiancée, Lady Katherine (Sophia Lowe), from the clutches of the evil King Sigismund (Andrzej Wajda). By stealing Katherine, he awoke the sleeping hornets and now they are after him, determined to reclaim her for themselves.
This will lead to a deadly war to defend Katherine and free her from the political game she is involved in. The earlier trailer focused more on the film’s story, while the red band footage is all about violence and gore. In this battle, Jan’s mercenary skills shine through as he effortlessly dispatches his opponents. However, the teaser demonstrates that mediaeval warfare was never a pretty sight, with several scenes of severed limbs and other terrible injuries caused by spears, maces, and other weapons.
Jan’s brutality is justified, therefore we see him pray for forgiveness from God just before we see him viciously shatter another soldier’s head. The film’s choreography and fidelity to mediaeval fighting are on display in bigger-scale clashes that take place outside of Jan’s personal concerns. Jan’s army confronts the force led by his mentor, who has been recruited to track down and kill Katherine. Jan, who is shown in the film as younger than the Czech fighter, faces off against an older and, in his mind, superior opponent as part of his ambition to join the ranks of the fabled warlords of his homeland. Michael Caine co-stars with Foster as Jan’s client, Lord Boresh.
Supporting actors Roland Mller, Matthew Goode, and William Moseley round out the ensemble. It will be the most costly Czech production ever made, and it will introduce the country’s most famous hero to a global audience. In addition to directing and scripting the picture, Petr Jákl also worked on the screenplay with Petr Bok, Petr Jákl Sr., and Michal Petrus, based on a tale by Marek Dobes. Jákl’s third time serving as writer and director comes after years of planning. On September 9, cinemas will begin showing the new film Medieval.
