The United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) initiated a series of secret and experimental initiatives in the early 1950s to develop new interrogation tactics, one of which was code-named “MK Ultra.” In the early 1960s, the American public had no idea that their government was conducting covert drug experiments on innocent citizens in an effort to gauge the viability of mind control. People in the United States learned of these unethical methods in the 1970s, but the entire extent of the government’s unethical testing wasn’t made public until 2001 when the relevant records were declassified.
Cinedigm’s new psychological thriller, set around the contentious time of history, tackles the epic true story of MK Ultra. Anson Mount, previously seen as Spock on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, undergoes a dramatic transformation in this new trailer, transitioning into the role of a brilliant psychiatrist who finds himself embroiled in the terrifying political intrigue of the CIA’s MK Ultra programme and the agency’s unconscionable experimentation of the 1960s. The government is utilising medications to weaken individuals and force them to make confessions that may or may not be real, and he is enlisted to aid with the scheme at the rural and secluded Mississippi Mental Hospital.
Can we expect him to toe the line and carry out the government’s directives? Once the truth is revealed, will he break ranks and fight back against them? Since the film’s writer and director, Joseph Sorrentino, is a former intelligence officer, the psychological thriller’s examination of the harmful experiments the United States has undertaken on its own population via the lens of MK Ultra carries a bit more weight than usual.
His own knowledge will undoubtedly provide credibility to the picture and make it more compelling than similar works. As is always the case, the truth is far more bizarre and evil than any fiction could ever hope to depict. Also featured in MK Ultra are Jason Patric (Lost Boys), Jen Richards (Mrs Fletcher), Jaime Ray Newman (Dopesick), Alon Aboutboul (Snowfall), and David Jensen (Queen Sugar). Lee Broda, Brian Mercer, Jerry Tankersley, Andreas Schilling, and Seth Willenson served as producers, while the filmmaker himself, together with Sigurjon Sighvatsson, Suzy Bergner, and Tom Rooker, served as executive producers. On October 7, MK Ultra will be released to cinemas and video on demand.
