Thai Cave Rescue, a six-part series on Netflix, has published its first trailer. The film is a dramatised recounting of the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue effort of the Wild Boars soccer team and their Coach Eak, which received widespread media attention. The video opens with a depiction of the events leading up to the Wild Boars’ arrival at the caverns on that fateful day in 2018, including the heavy rains, the impending storm, and the group’s desperate attempts to seek shelter.
The film depicts the rescue team’s dread as they watch the cave filled with water and introduces two antagonists — the elements and the water itself — as opponents they must overcome. Designated Survivor creators Michael Russell Gunn and Dana Ledoux Miller’s new Netflix series is an emotional look at the catastrophe, as rescue workers brace for the inevitable losses and face their own difficulties in the face of two powerful natural forces. It also eloquently outlines the series’ aim in a voiceover by one of the children: “my mother once told me, courage isn’t about being terrified.
This is the state of being terrified yet proceeding nevertheless. That’s correct, right? Thai Cave Rescue, directed by Thai filmmaker Baz Poonpiriya and Thai-American filmmaker Kevin Tancharoe, is set to examine the experiences of the heroes who participated in the expedition and is available on Netflix. In addition to MGM’s Thirteen Lives and Nat Geo’s The Rescue, Tom Waller’s independent film Cave Rescue is the fourth version of the rescue effort dramatised on the big and small screens (formerly titled, The Cave). Thailand’s Tham Luang caverns and the residences of the young team members serve as locations for the film’s many scenes. The Wild Boars cast includes 12 young actors from Chiang Rai, including Thaneth “Ek” Warakulnukroh as Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osottanakorn, Thaneth “Ek” Warakulnukroh as army medic Colonel Bhak Loharjun, and Papangkorn “Beam” Lerkchaleampote as Coach Eak. Cast members Damon Herriman as Dr Craig Challen, Christopher Stollery as Rick Stanton, Nicholas Farnell as John Volanthen, Nicholas Bell as Vern Unsworth, and Rodger Corser as Harry Harris all hail from different countries.
The insightful documentary Thai Cave Rescue premieres on Netflix on September 22. Based on the actual story of a Thai young soccer team that was trapped in one of the world’s most treacherous cave systems and the heroic efforts of their families, the people of Thailand, and volunteers from all around the world to rescue them.
