Rick Riordan notably developed Percy Jackson’s mythical universe of Greek gods, sea monsters, flying horses, and of course, demi-gods. An all-new adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is now in production for Disney+ and will serve as a reintroduction to the series. Riordan, who works as executive producer on the programme, has provided an update on its second season, despite the fact that production is still in progress and the first season has not yet been aired. In fact, this isn’t the first time Riordan’s wildly successful books have been turned into a television series. 20th Century Fox adapted the author’s work for the big screen for the first time more than a decade ago, with 2010’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and 2013’s Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
After the success of the first two films in the series, a third instalment was quickly scrapped. In 2020, Riordan admitted that, despite his best efforts, his movie adaptations had fallen short of satisfying his readers. “It’s just a couple of hours of fun for you guys. As much as I begged them not to, I feel like they are grinding up my life’s work “That’s what Riordan said. “And that’s that. But it’s OK. Things are fine. In a little while, we’ll get things fixed.” Percy Jackson and the Olympians, please step forward. Walker Scobell will take on the titular character in this new Disney+ series, with the first season’s eight episodes based on the first book in the novel series, The Lighting Thief.
Riordan has recently announced on GoodReads that despite not formally obtaining a green light for a second season, he is planning the series with further seasons in mind. After being asked if there will be a seasonal tie-in with the books, the author said: “That’s the concept, sure. First, we’ll need to get funding for more seasons. We’ve only been given permission to film one season so far, but if you guys like it, I have faith that we’ll be able to film more.” Having not viewed the earlier two films which both veered from the source material to a considerable amount, Riordan has said he is totally absorbed in this new body of work “I will be watching it every step of the way, from audition tapes all the way through to the final edit of every episode.
I imagine it will be like my books in some ways,” he remarked. After completing a novel, the author says, “By the time it’s published, I don’t need to sit down and read it since I’ve read it when I was writing it like a hundred times!” Percy Jackson and the Olympians do not have an official release date yet but Disney+ is looking for a 2024 debut date. The series will also include Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, Charlie Bushnell and Timm Sharp.
