The Walking Dead spin-off series that centres on Maggie and Negan now goes by its official title. Previously titled Isle of the Dead, the series starring Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is now called The Walking Dead: Dead City, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. The original working title, Isle of the Dead, has been officially replaced by The Walking Dead: Dead City, at least according to AMC. It was revealed in March that filming for the spinoff would begin in New Jersey, and by May, production was well underway.
The series will follow the adventures of franchise favourites Negan and Maggie as they attempt to stay alive in a New York City overrun by the undead who have claimed the city as their own without much resistance in a post-apocalyptic setting in which Manhattan has been shut off from the mainland. Because Negan previously killed Maggie’s husband with a bat pierced with nails, Maggie and Negan will not be on particularly good terms during their time in New York City.
When the series was announced, Cohan and Morgan, who play the characters, expressed their enthusiasm about reprising their roles in the Walking Dead world. For the next chapter in The Walking Dead Universe, Cohan is excited to work with Dan McDermott and the AMC crew. “Maggie is dear to my heart, and I can’t wait to continue her story in front of New York City’s breathtaking scenery with my good friend and frequent coworker, Jeffrey Dean Morgan. What Eli Jorné has made is just remarkable, and I can’t wait for the audience to see what happens next with Maggie and Negan.”
Morgan, for his part, appears equally thrilled to be taking on his new duty in the city, saying, “The sight of pedestrians in a metropolitan area has always been fascinating, but 5th Avenue, the Empire State Building, and the Statue of Liberty? Which city do you think is the greatest in the world? While the setting is impressive, the plot that Eli Jorné crafted is what really makes this novel stand out.” This show is part of the Walking Dead canon with others like the French-filmed Daryl Dixon spinoff and an upcoming Rick and Michonne-centric limited series. Dead: The Walking Dead Eli Jorné, who worked on The Walking Dead as a city writer and co-executive producer, will lead the new series as showrunner. The show will be directed by Scott M. Gimple, while Cohan and Morgan will be involved as executive producers. The premiere of the first season is set for 2023, and it will consist of six episodes.
