A preview of the trailer for the forthcoming biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, featuring Daniel Radcliffe as the legendary humorous singer, has been published by “Weird Al” Yankovic (Harry Potter). On August 29, 2022, a whole new trailer will premiere. This will be a little over a week before the film’s premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, and just over two months before its broader distribution on the Roku channel on November 4. Yankovic announced the teaser on Twitter and shared an eight-second clip with Radcliffe in the title role and highlighting some of the thrilling moments from Yankovic’s life that will be featured in the film. Part of the video was also a spoof of “I Love Rocky Road,” which was first released by Yankovic in 1983.
Eric Appel, who has directed for programmes including Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Silicon Valley, helms the film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Appel also contributed to the film’s writing by working on the script with Yankovic. The upcoming film will delve into the more serious side of the comedic figure, showing the audience the untold story behind the career of the iconic singer, whose discography includes memorable hits like the aforementioned “I Love Rocky Road,” as well as “Eat It,” “Canadian Idiot,” “White and Nerdy,” and “Amish Paradise.” Toby Huss (King of the Hill) and Julianne Nicholson (I, Tonya) join Radcliffe as Nick and Mary Yankovic, respectively, in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, making it a star-studded ensemble.
There’s also Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) as Oprah Winfrey and Spencer Treat Clark (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Steve Jay. Yankovic is not just the film’s subject but also a producer alongside Mike Farah, Joe Farrell, Whitney Hodack, Tim Headington, Lia Buman, and Max Silva. Appel co-wrote the script with Yankovic. Laugh Out Loud and Tango is responsible for making the movie. Interestingly, on September 8 of 2022, The Al Yankovic Story will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before making its way to the Roku channel for free on November 4.
