It was the sound of Top Gun: Maverick, the legacy sequel to the most popular picture in Paramount’s history, causing the world to gasp once more. Over the course of its 13th weekend, Tom Cruise and his crew of elite aviators in TOPGUN have soared above the $1.4 billion mark internationally, putting the film in the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time. Studio’s fan appreciation event the previous weekend boosted its turnout again domestically, and the sequel now ranks sixth all-time in box office revenue with a staggering $683.375 million, surpassing Marvel’s huge Avengers: Infinity War.
Maverick continues to demolish its own numbers week after week with almost no slowdown. The movie has made $2.7 million in the United States and $8.1 million in 63 other countries.
The United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, and Saudi Arabia are just some of the 37 nations where the Joseph Kosinski-directed sequel has become Paramount’s most successful live-action film to date. Worldwide, Maverick has made $720 million without a huge release in China or Russia, maintaining its total from the previous weekend. The United Kingdom continues to be Top Gun: Maverick’s highest earning international territory with a cumulative $98.5 million, followed by Japan ($85.8 million), Korea ($64.6 million), Australia ($62.2 million), France ($54.7 million), and Germany ($34.8 million).
This is despite the film’s record-breaking theatrical debut over Memorial Day weekend, which raked in a staggering $160 million. The 13th weekend of Maverick’s release saw over $24 million in revenue from Taiwan and over $21 million from both Saudi Arabia and Brazil. Nearly 40 years after the debut of Top Gun, viewers were stunned by Cruise’s performance as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, the renowned fighter pilot from the 1987 film.
The new TOPGUN trainees in Maverick include Glen Powell, Danny Ramirez, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Val Kilmer, who reprises his role as Mav’s antagonist Iceman from the original TOPGUN. Top Gun: Maverick’s success in cinemas is expected to continue, and the film’s release on Fandango’s Vudu streaming service is scheduled for August 23. This winter, fans can now get Maverick on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray.
