Now that the picture is available on video on demand and the long summer movie season is winding down, it appears like Baz Luhrmann’s extravagant Elvis biography may finally go off into the sunset. The 68 international markets where Luhrmann’s Elvis is currently playing contributed $2 million to the film’s worldwide total. As the King’s summer vacation draws to a close, his appearance on PVOD earlier this month has resulted in a 35% decline in carryover viewers compared to the previous week. With this week’s box office, the film’s foreign total has reached an astounding $125 million, for a total of $269.7 million globally.
After Bohemian Rhapsody, Elvis is the highest-grossing film based on a musician’s life.
After its release in 2018, this biopic on the life of Freddie Mercury, the multitalented lead singer of the rock band Queen, earned Rami Malek an Academy Award for his portrayal of Mercury. Like Malek’s Mercury, Austin Butler’s performance as the King has been met with rapturous acclaim. Butler went through extensive voice training, practised his accent, and coloured his characteristic blond hair black to more closely resemble Elvis Presley’s own dyed black, naturally blond hair. When composing the film’s soundtrack, composer Jerry Goldsmith mixed Butler’s voice with those of the singer Elvis Presley to create the most genuine rendition possible of several of Presley’s most famous songs.
In my opinion, only a director of Luhrmann’s calibre could do justice to the incredible life of Elvis Presley. Elvis’ life and aesthetic—characterized by sequined jumpsuits, bright colours, and a very stiff pompadour—was a great fit for his fondness for strong colours, glitter, and glamour. As a whole, the video provides a highly stylised examination of one of today’s most compelling musicians. Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge) and Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks) both made appearances in the film alongside Butler. Elvis, which premiered in cinemas on June 24, 2022, may now be rented via video-on-demand services. Prime Video, Vudu, and YouTube are among the streaming providers where you may now rent the movie.
