The animated picture DC League of Super-Pets, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, is continuing to fly at the box office, with an expected $6 million in revenues this weekend. This brings the film’s global total to a healthy $130.4 million. The movie is in its fifth weekend of distribution after opening in the United States on July 29. This weekend, it played on 8,443 screens in 70 locations, earning $6 million, a holdover decline of only 23%. The United Kingdom, Brazil, Spain, and Mexico all witnessed drops of less than 30% from the previous week, while the United States saw a dip of only 1%. Box office earnings rose in numerous regions, including France (+6%), the Netherlands (+17%), and Germany (+47%).
As of this weekend, the film’s foreign box office total stands at $62.9 million, representing slightly over 48% of the film’s total gross worldwide. DC League of Super-Pets has fared well with both reviewers and moviegoers, despite the film’s monetary success. In the animated series DC League of Super-Pets, Johnson voices Krypto the Super Dog, who recruits an unlikely group of superheroic animals from a local shelter in order to rescue the abducted Justice League. Hart voices another superheroic dog, Ace.
The film has an A- CinemaScore and is now sitting at 73% on Rotten Tomatoes with a substantially higher 87% Audience Rating. Written by Jason Stern (The Lego Batman Movie) and co-written with John Whittington, DC League of Super-Pets is Stern’s directorial debut in theatres. Besides Johnson and Hart, the film also has an A-list voice cast including Marc Maron as Lex Luthor, Keanu Reeves as Bruce Wayne, John Krasinski as Clark Kent, and Kate McKinnon as Lulu, and Olivia Wilde as Lois Lane.
The cast also features several other well-known actors, such as Thomas Middleditch (Middleditch and Schwartz), Jameela Jamil (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law), John Early (Search Party), and Dascha Polanco (Orange Is the New Black), to name just a few. Opening in Japan on Friday, August 26, the DC League of Super-Pets will continue its global rollout over the next few weeks. The premiere in Italy is scheduled for the next Thursday, September 1, while the premiere in Australia is set for the following Thursday, September 15.
