The English, an upcoming period drama co-produced by Amazon Studios and the BBC, stars Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place) and Chaske Spencer (Wild Indian) and tells the story of two strangers in middle America who form an unbreakable bond in order to traverse the impossible—a terrifying landscape constructed on “dreams and blood.”
The official first-look photographs of the two stars racing headfirst into an unpleasant predicament are now available on Prime Video, from the six-episode legendary television series written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Hugo Blick. A forthcoming period drama set in 1890s mid-America and produced by Wolf Gait Productions Ltd. follows the compelling story of English aristocrat Lady Cornelia Locke (Blunt) and Pawnee ex-cavalry scout Eli Whipp (Spencer) as they attempt to reach the new town of Hoxem, Wyoming while facing horrifying deterrents that will test their physical and mental limits.
Locke and Whipp are both attracted to their destinies, but they don’t realise that their shared past ties their destinies together. The English will investigate a string of strange killings as the history that binds its two protagonists together becomes increasingly transparent. Using themes of self-discovery and retribution as its foundation, The English promises “to weave a singularly fascinating fable on race, power, and love.” Rafe Spall, who will also appear in the upcoming 2020 crime series The Salisbury Poisonings alongside Emily Blunt and Octavia Spencer, has joined the cast of the new TV show. Toby Jones (Marvellous), Tom Hughes (A Discovery of Witches), Ciarán Hinds (The Shadow Line), Valerie Pachner (The Kingsman), and Stephen Rea (The Shadow Line) are also a part of the ensemble cast (The Terror).
Rea plays Sheriff Robert Marshall, who is tasked with solving the “bizarre and grotesque” murders plaguing Hoxem, notably the one of a young widow’s (Pachner) husband. So yes, we have no idea who the other actors will play in this special event series. In the United Kingdom, The English will premiere on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer in the month of November. The series will debut on Amazon Prime Video in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Blick not only penned the script for the next historical drama, but he also directed it and serves as an executive producer. Blunt served as an executive producer alongside Greg Brenman (The Honourable Woman), while Killing Eve’s Colin Wratten was tapped to serve as showrunner. The first episode of The English will air in November.
