In case you weren’t already pumped for the launch of American Gigolo on Showtime next month, the network has released a brand new teaser to get you pumped up. The new clip, with Jon Bernthal in the character made famous by Richard Gere in the 1980 film of the same name, is tense and thrilling for more than one reason. In the new trailer, Julian Kaye (Bernthal) is a former sex worker who has recently been released from prison after serving a sentence for a crime he did not commit. The trailer, which originally featured the iconic “Call Me” by Blondie, has been replaced by a more intense soundtrack to reflect the new phase of Julian Kaye’s (Bernthal) life.
With nowhere to go and no idea what to do next, Julian becomes caught up in the aftermath of his release, in which a mystery someone is out to get him, and in his attempts to restart the work he was performing before his incarceration. Whatever trouble Julian got himself into “isn’t over,” as he puts it in the trailer. The new trailer focuses more on the violence viewers may anticipate throughout the series, which is based on Julian’s connection (past or otherwise) with Michelle (Gretchen Mol), with whom he was in a relationship before he was sent to jail for fifteen years.
Now that he is free, Julian must learn to make it in a world he knows nothing about, a society that is determined to punish him for a crime he did not commit, and a world in which he has no allies and no safe haven. Fans also get to experience Bernthal’s undeniable charm as a leading man, and it appears that Showtime is aware of this, as they captioned a video of him on Twitter with the phrase “Come for Jon Bernthal.”
Don’t miss out on Julian Kaye! Twittering out weekly snippets of Julian’s gentler language to excite fans for the September launch, the show’s creators appear to be pushing as heavily into the show’s more intimate features as they are into its exciting ones, and for good cause. Showtime has released a number of sequel series this year, including American Gigolo, a direct sequel to the 1980 film starring Gere, and The Man Who Fell to Earth, a sequel to the David Bowie film of the same name. Rosie O’Donnell, Wayne Brady, and Leland Orser all feature in the series, which was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
On September 9, Showtime will air the world premiere of American Gigolo.
