Since it was revealed in May that previous series actors David Tennant and Catherine Tate would be returning for the series’ 60th anniversary special, fans of Doctor Who have been giddy with anticipation. However, there have been few announcements about the anniversary episode, which will premiere in late 2023. In any case, fans have been given a taste of what’s to come after attending a panel with Tennant this past weekend at Fan Expo Boston. When the programme was revived for a second season, Tennant took over as the eleventh actor to play the title role.
As the viewership for the revived series grew, David Tennant became a fan favourite as the Doctor, and in his last season, Tennant’s Doctor was joined by the equally popular Donna Noble as the companion (Tate). Fans of Doctor Who are eagerly anticipating the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate to the programme. Tennant has appeared in a special episode since leaving the series, but the prospect of seeing the two of them together again has them excited. Specifics of the upcoming special are being kept under wraps. Tennant and Tate’s involvement are the only pieces of information available to fans.
However, it has been reported as a major celebration commemorating the show’s lengthy run. Fans are going crazy with all the theories and rumours they can come up with because of this. While appearing on a panel at Fan Expo, Tennant chose to add fuel to the fire by saying: What I find fascinating about the possibility that Catherine Tate and I were filming is that we were a little unlucky (or lucky), in that we were filming certain sequences that were in the public, and so it had to be admitted that we were in it. Thus, the vast majority of material involving human actors has taken place in closed environments.
In other words, the anticipated amount of content is significantly understated. No one seems to have figured out why Catherine and I are there just yet. There is a lot of theory and conjecture, but I can’t wait for people to see what a little gear we are in Russell’s big machine.
Tennant managed to say just enough to get fans nuts without giving away any of the good stuff with this comment. With so many Doctors, companions, aliens, allies, and foes to honour over the course of 60 years, it’s anyone’s guess what the celebration would include.
The return of showrunner Russell T. Davies, beginning with the anniversary special, is also something that fans are looking forward to. He was the showrunner from the series revival’s inception to David Tennant’s departure as The Doctor.
Fans of Doctor Who frequently credit Davies for giving the show a much-needed facelift and reintroducing it to a new generation of viewers, helping it to once again become a staple of popular culture and science fiction. When asked about Davies’s comeback, Tennant said: What Russell T. Davies has going on in his head! To have a ferret running around in there would be so thrilling if only… I am aware of his recent return to the role of Doctor Who’s showrunner. Yeah, I can imagine how thrilling that is for you. I’m not supposed to talk anything about it, and I know it. It is anticipated that the 60th-anniversary episode will air in late 2023.
