The announcement that Ncuti Gatwa will be playing the Fourteenth Doctor earlier this year sent the Doctor Who fandom into a frenzy of excitement. Now, the only remaining mystery is how long the Doctor Who audience will have to wait to see the newest Time Lord. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, fans may not have to wait as long as they expect. As of right now, November seems like a good time to start filming Gatwa’s debut season on the classic show. Even more so during the COVID period, faithful fans of Doctor Who often had to wait years between new episodes, much to their chagrin. With that in mind, many viewers will welcome the news that filming on Gatwa will begin this year.
However, there has been no announcement regarding the premiere date for Season 2. Due to the special episode planned for the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, fans are worried that Gatwa’s season won’t premiere until 2024. Fan theories and anticipation over Gatwa’s casting are all that can be entertained at this time. Later this year, Gatwa’s predecessor, Jodie Whittaker, will make her farewell appearance as the thirteenth Doctor. After four years and three seasons on the show, she will be leaving her position in an October episode commemorating the BBC’s centennial.
Again, it’s up to fans to speculate endlessly until the programme airs on whether or not Gatwa will make an appearance in this special. Gatwa released a statement in May after he was cast, in which he said: Since I found out in February of this year that I was cast in the part, it has been difficult to keep it a secret from my many friends and family. But now that I have done it, and now that we have done it together, I feel incredible. It really is a great honour to be considered. This part is legendary, and it means a lot to me and a lot of other people because of that. Everyone may feel included and satisfied with this arrangement. I, too, am appreciative of the opportunity and will do my best to carry the torch on.
Don’t worry, Gatwa lovers who are having a hard time contemplating having to wait until 2024 to see him on TV again. The fourth season of Netflix’s Sex Education, on which he stars as Eric, is now filming, and it has already been revealed that his hiring in Doctor Who would not interfere with filming for that series. Both Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and the upcoming AppleTV+ military drama Masters of the Air include the actor in unknown roles.
