Both longtime followers and curious outsiders may now rejoice: the moment has here. The third trailer for Studio MAPPA’s upcoming Chainsaw Man anime adaptation has been published, and if you know even the slightest thing about the series, you’ll know that it’s as gory as you’d expect. In Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine ran a serialisation of Chainsaw Man, the brainchild of manga artist Tatsuki Fujimoto. Part one of this action-horror manga concluded in December of 2020, and the second instalment has only recently begun publishing in Shonen Jump+. There are Devils and Devil Hunters in Chainsaw Man’s world, and they both want the other dead.
As a result of humankind’s inherent depravity and the desire for revenge, devils are created. But there are a few notable outliers. Some humans have managed to form alliances with devils, earning them the title of Devil Hunters and bestowing upon them access to devils’ specialised abilities. Denji, the protagonist, is a human who, after being abandoned to his death, makes a deal with his pet Devil named Pochita to spare his life.
In exchange, Pochita transforms Denji into Chainsaw Man, a type of Devil-human hybrid with chainsaws protruding from his torso. Denji, emboldened by his newfound abilities, decides to become a member of the Public Safety Devil Hunters, an organisation dedicated to eradicating the Devil race. Beginning with an image of Makima, a prominent Devil Hunter and a central character in the series, going with two others into the scene of a horrific massacre, the teaser sets the tone for what is to come. She describes an event that occurred in the United States a little over a decade ago when a mass shooting spawned a new monster known as the Gun Devil.
Soon after her brief explanation, we are introduced to Denji, Makima, Aki Hayakawa, another Public Safety Devil Hunter, and Power, a Fiend and a Devil Hunter who is a member of Makima’s team. About a minute into the clip, it transforms into a gory, action-packed show of violence. Denji in his new form can be seen using his chainsaw hands to slash at devils, and many additional pictures show the other characters apparently charging into the fight as well. In addition to showing off the characters’ visuals, the teaser also does a terrific job of letting viewers hear their dialogue.
We get to hear Kikunosuke Toya as Denji, Tomori Kusunoki as Makima, Shogo Sakata as Aki Hayakawa, and Fairouz Ai as Power, to name a few, from the cast in the teaser. It has been announced that Chainsaw Man will be released this October. The first part of the manga, known as the “Public Safety Arc,” will be adapted into an anime series. The continuing second part has fresh chapters dropping every Tuesday.
