After a week, fans still have many questions about the plot of Prime Video’s sci-fi action comedy Paper Girls, which features time travel and has been likened to the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. On the other hand, the discovered family elements of the tale and the fact that the programme has individuals from the past and the future interacting with one another spark an entirely new discussion about the show. Star of the series Sofia Rosinsky visited by for an exclusive interview to talk about this very topic. Rosisnky, who plays Mac Coyle, spoke extensively about her character, attitude, and the surprising turning point in the conversation with Perri Nemiroff.
And if the programme is renewed for a second season, Rosinsky has some ideas about what she’d want to do with the character. I think Mac’s humour is prevalent throughout the first season, up to the point where she receives some devastating news. Then, as one would expect from the news she had just heard, it begins to die down a bit. But I would say that probably at the beginning of the series, Mac is very guarded, and she is a really tough nut to crack. However, I think that when she hears certain news, that shell starts to melt away a little bit, because she realises there is no point in trying to keep that up and keep her guard up. Seriously, it’s pointless. No longer useful. So, while I can see how that may feel stifling to her, knowing that she doesn’t have to deal with it would be a relief. At home, she felt more comfortable in this guise.
The conditions in her household are really hostile. She’s had to be incredibly resilient to make it this far, and I find it fascinating that the good, positive influence these girls have had on her, and also just this information that she finds out, has allowed her to let that go a little bit and actually explore who she wants to be & who she knows she is behind that shell. I love seeing her sense of humour come through and her character change; she has a beautiful arc, and I can’t wait to see where she goes next. Rosinsky isn’t the only one who hopes Paper Girls will return for a second season.
Showrunners Brian K. Vaughan, Christopher C. Rogers, and Cliff Chiang said they “definitely have a path planned” for Season 2 and expressed their desire to implement it during the panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Paper Girls is adapted from Vaughan and Chiang’s comic book series of the same name, which lasted for 30 issues between 2015 and 2019. Originally written for the stage, Stephany Folsom modified the narrative for the small screen (Toy Story 4, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power).
