Despite the fact that Nancy Drew won’t be back on The CW until 2023, the programme has accomplished something remarkable by avoiding cancellation. Not only can fans rejoice that the programme has lived to fight cancellation another day, but news about the upcoming season has begun to seep out since production has recently commenced in Vancouver.
Kennedy McMann, who plays Nancy Drew, visited The Wayne Ayers Podcast to discuss the recent cancellations, Nancy and Ace, the forthcoming season, and more, though she couldn’t say anything about the show itself. The CW has been in the news a lot lately since it has cancelled over a dozen series for the year 2022, the most recent of which is The Flash (with a final 9th season), which will bring an end to the Arrowverse, and Tom Swift, a spin-off of Nancy Drew that just aired its final episode on August 2.
None of the repeated postponements has seemed to dampen spirits on set. McMann said to Ayers, “I feel so blessed that we’re still on the air. Cancellation is something I have no idea if the writers have ever considered. This is not how things are feeling on set, but we can’t say for sure because we don’t have all the episodes. I don’t know how this season will wrap up. Everyone, as far as I’m aware, hopes and plans to keep the show going for as long as we can. Nothing in the press suggests this is the end of the road for Nancy Drew, so we can all relax a bit. Some of our predictions and speculations regarding the forthcoming season were validated by McMann, and others were shot down.
She also shared some details about the story’s characters and themes, however, we still don’t know what kind of otherworldly nightmare will strike Horseshoe Bay. This season focuses heavily on [The Drew Crew] characters’ own paths to adulthood. All of them are, in some sense, just beginning their adult lives, from a professional one as well. They’ve moved out of their parent’s houses if they lived there before. Nancy is now offering her detective services to the public. George is studying law. Bess has accepted her position as the Historical Society’s new Keeper.
Nick is sorta figuring out where he stands with everything now that Nick and George are broken up. Ace has recently taken a job in the mortuary. There are a lot of divergent paths that may be taken. The season’s central mystery is introduced in the pilot episode and will require their collective efforts to solve throughout the season. She also remembered her friends Nancy and Ace. They will undoubtedly make things juicy when they arrive. Their level of trust in each other and their capacity to emotionally rely on one another is at an all-time high, and I believe they are entering a new phase in their relationship.
I guess that’s what I’ve always wished for Nancy: the chance to open up to someone and feel safe enough to share her innermost thoughts and feelings. That’s a big part of it, for sure.” But if you believe you know what will occur between them this season, you are sorely mistaken. She continued, “I think it will be unexpected the way that the writers have kinda taken this curse and what they have to deal with in the terms of their relationship with each other and how to navigate that. Reading what the show’s fans have to say is one of my favourite things to do, and I’ve read a lot of fan theories and speculations, but so far nobody has gotten anything right.
What will happen next will be completely out of the blue and incredibly rewarding. Our play is, by its own nature, immensely romantic, gorgeous, heartbreaking, and agonising. Next year, Nancy Drew will be airing on The CW.
