Even though Nancy Drew isn’t returning until 2023, the programme has managed to escape the latest wave of cancellations at The CW with flying colours. And now that production has begun in Vancouver, not only can the program’s fans rejoice the fact that the show has survived another day, but information about the show’s upcoming season have began to emerge. Nancy Drew herself, Kennedy McMann, couldn’t say much about the new season, but she did visit The Wayne Ayers Podcast to discuss the recent cancellations, Nancy and Ace, and more. Recently, the CW has been making news by cancelling more than a dozen series in 2022, including The Flash (with a final 9th season), which officially ended the Arrowverse, and Nancy Drew’s spin-off Tom Swift, which recently aired its final episode on August 2.
Despite the frequent postponements, there doesn’t appear to be any negative impact on set morale. Ayers was informed by McMann, “I feel so fortunate that we’re still on the air. I’m not sure if the creators are considering [cancelling the show]. Despite the fact that we don’t yet got all of the episodes, the atmosphere on set isn’t one of negativity. How the season ends is beyond me. As far as I’m aware, everyone hopes and plans to keep the programme going for as long as we are able.
As long as there is no formal announcement of a final season for Nancy Drew, we can all breathe a bit easier. As for the forthcoming season, McMann both validated and contradicted several of our assumptions and hypotheses. We don’t know what otherworldly terror will strike Horseshoe Bay yet, but we do know a little bit more about the individuals and the themes: Much of the season is around [The Drew Crew’s] personal journeys toward adulthood. In many respects, they’re all beginning their official adult lives, even in terms of their careers. If they formerly resided in their parents’ homes, they have now moved out. Nancy is now officially in business as a private investigator.
George is pursuing a career in law. Keeper of the Historical Society Bess has been appointed. Now that Nick and George are no longer together, Nick is trying to figure out his place in the world. At the mortuary, Ace has just recently begun working. There have been a slew of branches created as a result of these events… As the season gets underway, they’ll all be working together to solve the season’s central mystery, which is introduced in the opening episode. Nancy and Ace weren’t forgotten by her either. Things are about to get steamy with them. “I believe they have reached a new level of emotional openness and reliance on one another in their relationship, and I believe this is the beginning of a new chapter for them both. In a way, that’s what I’ve always wanted Nancy to be able to do: share that experience and vulnerability with another person. As a result of this, it’s undoubtedly a factor.”
Think again about what’s going to happen between them this season if you believe you know what’s going to happen! Further, “I think the authors have handled this curse and what it means for their connection with one other in a surprising way,” she said. Since I enjoy reading what fans have to say, I’ve read a lot of speculations about the show, but so far, everyone has been wrong about it. I believe it will be both surprising and enjoyable. Everything in our play is lovely and beautiful, but it’s also heartbreaking and sad at the same time.
