Squeal’s release date might be welcomed by fans of Guillermo Del Toro-style tales and Black Mirror. The film’s trailer was released exclusively by ScreenRant today, which billed it as a “dark fairy tale with troubling twists.” When a guy searching for his lost father in Eastern Europe meets up on a pig farm with proprietors who are… unusual, his quest is cut short. To be shown at the end of the month, a Latvian production is being staged.
It begins with disturbing footage of a man chained up, but we quickly learn that this is far from the most bizarre aspect of Squeal’s upcoming theatrical release.
We can only conjecture at this point as to how the pigs play a role in the twisted plot, but they’re certainly more clever than your usual pig. As the title says. After that, there are no limits to the odd individuals we see in the video, including a woman who appears to be playing the damsel in distress, her angry father, some males barking (yep), and a grimy landscape that doesn’t exactly welcome you. Basically, a must-see for horror enthusiasts.
In Squeal, Aik Karapetian, the film’s director, tells an unconventional story.
Firstborn, a dismal narrative of an unlikeable protagonist who accidentally murders someone, is his directorial debut, while People Out There tells the story of a young guy drawn into the underworld of crime, drugs, and violence due to parental estrangement. Karapetian creates the script for Squeal as he has for his other films, but this time he does it in collaboration with screenwriter Aleksander Rodinov (Freeze Dance). Kevin Janssens, Laura Silia, Aigars Vilims, Normunds Griesti, Juris Bartkevis, and Guntis Pilsums are among the cast members of the film.
The squeal will have its North American premiere on August 19 in key US cities. On the same day, it’ll be accessible to watch on demand.
Summary in full
In Aik Karapetian’s gloomy fairy tale SQUEAL, Samuel (Kevin Janssens) goes on a journey to find his father when he is far away from home. Kirke (Laura Silia) is a pig farmer’s daughter who lives in a rural part of Eastern Europe. A small traffic accident leads to a fortuitous encounter with Kirke. It becomes clear to Sam that he must shift his priorities if he is to live. Her initial generosity is a ruse to entrap him and use him as a slave on the farm as punishment. When he is confined to a cage with pigs for most of the time, it forces him to adapt. As luck would have it, Sam’s confidence is boosted by a magical piglet who reveals the path to freedom and true love.
