It won’t be long until die-hard fans of the “King of Rock and Roll” may relive his life and success through a biopic on their own couches. The release dates for filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis have been confirmed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Pre-orders and Video OnDemand rentals for Elvis go on sale on August 9; the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD releases are scheduled for September 13. This is a biographical account of Elvis Presley’s life and career, beginning with the first time he met Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). Elvis’ ascent to fame and the controversies over his performance style are shown in this section.
Presley’s image as a movie star and family-friendly performer is being recreated by Colonel Parker because of the dispute. However, there are other instances in the film where Presley defies Parker’s orders and performs as he sees fit. Presley’s fame eventually brings him to the stage in Sin City, where he performed until 1977. His connection with Colonel Parker grows more problematic throughout the course of his career as he uncovers more and more of Colonel Parker’s true intentions. Presley’s personal life is also examined in the film, including his marriage to Priscilla (Olivia DeJonge).
The assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. & Robert Kennedy also feature prominently in the story. Actors Helen Thomson and Richard Roxburgh portrayed Presley’s mother Gladys and father Vernon in the film. In addition to directing, Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce, and Jeremy Doner co-wrote the script with Baz Luhrmann. The Great Gatsby, Australia, and Moulin Rouge! are just a few of Luhrmann’s past directing credits.
