Is anyone up for another reboot? According to Deadline, 20th Century is working on a new version of the enormously famous 1988 smash Working Girl. However, it is not certain if Selena Gomez will also participate in the film or if she is only working behind the scenes.
Kevin Wade’s original screenplay will be rewritten by Ilana Pena for the remake. Prior to working on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Diary of a Future President, Pena worked as a writer on the CW sitcom. Little is known about the new Working Girl and how much of the original narrative will be kept in this revival.
After years of 20th-century reboots and spinoffs like 2021’s Home Sweet Home Alone, Cheaper by the Dozen, and the latest Disney+ series featuring Josh Peck’s Turner and Hooch, this picture will join the ranks. When Melanie Griffith (the Staten Island secretary) breaks her leg, she assumes the persona of her boss (Sigourney Weaver) in the original film, which has a decidedly New York feel to it. To get the deal done, she enlists the aid of a friend (Joan Cusack) by pretending to be her boss in front of a colleague (Harrison Ford) from another firm.
At the box office, the picture raked in more than $100 million and was praised by critics. A stunning six Academy Awards and Golden Globes were nominated for it. Weaver and Griffith were both honoured with Oscar nominations and Golden Globes, respectively, for their performances in “Let the River Run” and “Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.” A spin-off isn’t a new phenomenon for the picture. Sandra Bullock starred in the NBC comedy of the same name, which aired in 1990.
Due to the show’s lack of popularity, the network decided to discontinue it after only eight episodes. In 2019, a Broadway musical based on Cyndi Lauper’s music and lyrics were in development. There has yet to be a completely staged production. The revamped film has not been given a cast or any specifics.
