Candy Darling, a transgender legend and Andy Warhol muse, is the subject of a new biography starring Hari Nef, Deadline reports. Stephanie Kornick, the writer of Transparent, will pen the unnamed biography. New York transgender actor Darling got her start after being noticed by Andy Warhol in a Jackie Curtis production called Glitz, Glamour, and Gold. Following the success of her performance as Nona Noonan, Warhol sought her out for roles in his stage comedies Flesh and Women In Revolt.
Acting in independent films like Silent Night, and Bloody Night made Darling feel disappointed by her lack of success in the mainstream industry. The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed both used her as inspiration for songs, while St. Vincent used her as the inspiration for the cover art for her album “Daddy’s Home” to make up for the lack of exposure she received in the mainstream media. After being cast as Gittel on Transparent, Nef was nominated for a SAG Award in 2016.
Since then, she has gone on to model and write about her experience as a transgender woman, and she is touted as the first trans model signed to IMG Models and the 1st trans woman to appear on the cover of a British magazine, among other things. She is also an advocate for transgender rights and writes about it. Asked about her forthcoming role and the influence of Darling on pop culture, Nef said: I’ve always wanted to play Candy, and it’s an incredible privilege to be able to do so. Transsexual beauty girl Candy Bridges reigned over Warhol’s New York and Nixon’s America as an independent legend, bridging the gap between her aspirations and the harsh realities of her life.
She was swift and bright. She aspired to be regarded seriously as an actor above everything else. She showed me and many other young women how to dream and, perhaps more importantly, how to be. She’s the model. To prepare for the part, Nef chatted to Darling’s friends and read through her diaries, as well as looked through old scripts from theatre archives that Darling has performed on stage. Zackary Drucker will serve as executive producer for the biopic (Transparent, Lady and the Dale). Christian D. Bruun, Louis Spiegler, and Katrina Wolfe are among the producers.
The film’s director is still unidentified. In terms of manufacturing or casting, no further information is available at this moment. In an interview with Deadline, Bruun mentioned Nef’s casting, saying: Everyone on the Candy team is thrilled to have Hari on board. All of us knew that Candy’s tale was worthy of cinema, but it’s genuinely exciting to envision what Hari would bring to the character and we’re ecstatic to go on this adventure with her.
In light of the impending biopics on Marilyn Monroe and Weird Al Yankovic, it will be intriguing to see what Darling’s biopic brings to the table. In addition, Nef’s interpretation will be based on accurate facts, so it will be well worth the time & effort to see it through.
