An interview with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai recently revealed what the series’ future might hold, with Sakurai suggesting that the game’s next installment may include a substantially smaller list of combatants than the one found in Super Smash Bros. With the release of the final Fighters Pass DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in October, Sakurai waved goodbye to the popular franchise, leaving many fans wondering what was next.
The enormous cast of 89 playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate makes it one of the most ambitious video games in recent memory. Mario and Bowser join forces with Pac-Man and Solid Snake, two of the most popular third-party characters in gaming history, to form an impressive squad. Despite the fact that the game was released in 2018, Nintendo continued to provide updates in the form of Fighter Passes until the fall of 2021, bringing the total number of playable characters in the game to 74. Throughout the Smash Bros. series, Masahiro Sakurai has been the team’s leader and the game’s director. As a result, Sakurai has indicated that a new Smash Bros. game couldn’t be made without him in the series’ development.
When asked about the time and effort it took to add so many new characters to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sakurai said, “It’s been a lot of work.” “For the sake of our fans, we tell ourselves that we must strive and do our best to produce material that is more than adequate. A single piece of DLC fighter with their supporting stages, music or other content proved to be more difficult to implement than one piece of base game content.” Sakurai has previously been believed to have contemplated quitting the Super Smash Bros. team for his own health due to the strain of working on the game alone. He believes the next iteration of the Smash Bros. series will require a smaller cast in order to be viable, adding that: “At the very least, in terms of content and fighters, I believe we’ve reached our limit. Because we’d have to reduce the number of characters if I were to work on another Super Smash Bros. game, I’m not sure if fans would be happy with it.”
When it comes to a sequel to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the game’s expansive roster was a major draw for many gamers. Many fans of the franchise will be disappointed by Sakurai’s comments about reducing the number of combatants in the future game. Many long-time fans of the franchise, on the other hand, would welcome a new entry that focuses more on fighting mechanics rather than the number of the roster.
As of right now, there is no official word on whether or not a third installment in the Super Smash Bros. series is in the works, leaving many fans to speculate about the series’ future. If the series continues, it’s likely that the next game will have a larger creative team than the previous ones. This could be the beginning of a new approach for the Super Smash Bros. video game series, but only time will tell whether or not the fans like the new direction.
