Players are reenacting the original Spider-Man pointing meme now that Spider-Man is a part of Fortnite. Spider-Man has had many classic moments, including a sequence from the old 60s Spider-Man cartoon in which the web-slinging hero faces an imposter who is trying to frame him for robbing an art museum. To make matters more complicated, both characters point at each other, which has since become a meme anytime two identical things are compared to each other, or someone accuses another person of something they too are guilty of doing.
There have been numerous references to the “Pointing Spider-Man” meme over the years – including a post-credits scene in Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, where Spider-Man 2099 engages in a shouting match with the Spider-Man of the classic 60’s cartoon from which the meme originated – in both Marvel and DC comics. As a celebration of Spider-inclusion Man’s as a PlayStation-exclusive DLC character last month, developer Crystal Dynamics recently recreated the “Pointing Spider-Man” meme.
It was only a matter of time until players began reenacting Spidey’s famous pointing moment in Epic’s enormously successful multiplayer battle royale, the Webhead, which arrived in Fortnite a few days ago. Ludiqpich198, a Reddit member, recently submitted this photograph to the Fortnite forum of themself and two other Spider-Man players utilizing a pointing emote on each other. Fortnite’s four-player Squads make it easy to add even more Spidey lookalikes to the meme, which several commenters have discussed.
Last week’s release of Chapter 3’s Battle Pass included a new skin for Spider-Man, the newest Marvel hero to appear in the game. Spidey’s web-swinging features in Fortnite have received positive feedback from players, with some even comparing them to Marvel’s Avengers. A recent Easter Egg reveals that the Green Goblin, Spider-archnemesis, Man’s maybe riding his bat-shaped Goblin Glider into Fortnite with some more members of the Uncanny X-Men, so he’s not the only new Marvel figure going to The Island.
A big element of pop culture over the past few years, Fortnite has broken records this week for the most concurrent players in the game’s history with the launch of Fortnite Chapter 3 featuring top-selling musicians like Ariana Grande performing in-game concerts. Epic’s virtual playground, Fortnite, is now home to one of the internet’s most widely shared memes, which means that users will soon be re-creating it in the game.
