In Review: Season 2, Episode 4
After Mitsuya turns down Hakkai’s resignation, he plans to have a talk with Taiju about the tensions between the Tokyo Manji and the Black Dragon gangs. Hakkai had a flashback of when he and Mitsuya’s siblings first met on a playground and Hakkai intervened to stop Mitsuya from beating up another youngster. He also remembers Mitsuya smiling at him and asking him to only use his power to defend others. Hakkai tries to prevent Mitsuya from talking to Taiju in the present, but Mitsuya forbids it. Takemichi and Chifuyu make the same decision as Mitsuya and Hakkai, and decide to tag along with them as they go meet Taiju and the Black Dragon Gang. Mitsuya, in a luxury apartment building, suggests a different approach to resolving the tensions between the rival gangs. In return for releasing Yuzuha, he demands that Hakkai join the Black Dragon Gang. Hakkai’s resignation would indicate merely that he was protecting his sister from Taiju, not that he was terrified of his brother, and this was known by Mitsuya, who understood that Taiju was pressuring Yuzuha to do something for him. Mitsuya blocks Taiju’s quick blow to the face. Taiju accepts Mitsuya’s proposal for a ceasefire between the two gangs in return for Yuzuha’s release and Hakkai’s induction into the Black Dragon Gang, which Mitsuya reiterates.
Takemichi promises Chifuyu that Hakkai would murder his brother for Yuzuha’s sake on the way home. Instead of cursing his birth, Mitsuya encourages Hakkai to use his might to defend others. So, Takemichi resolves to go back in time and check on the future to see if anything has changed. Chifuyu, however, cautions Takemichi that he might not be allowed to return because he was previously detained and that he thus won’t be able to shake Naoto’s hand. There is a significant probability that nothing has changed, as Chifuyu also points out to Takemichi by saying that it was Mitsuya, not him, who did anything to liberate Yuzuha. By telling Takemichi and Chifuyu the truth about his broken family, Hakkai hopes to strengthen his resolve and break the tension in their relationship. Hakkai claims that since his mother’s death and his father’s absence, Taiju has been the head of the household. Also, even as a kid, Taiju towered above his peers in terms of height and strength. Taiju’s pals respected him so much because he was a genius at making others like him. In addition, Taiju is an expert violent user who shows no favouritism toward any of his siblings. Hakkai used to believe that Taiju’s love for him was always excruciating, given that Taiju often resorted to violence when Hakkai failed to live up to his standards.
Hakkai’s perception of Taiju’s devotion to his family changed once he met Mitsuya. Hakkai has vowed to utilise his power to shield Yuzuha even then, even if it means taking the brunt of Taiju’s aggression himself. But Taiju betrayed Yuzuha’s trust by punching her much harder than previously. Because of this, Hakkai doubts that Taiju would keep his word to Mitsuya and release Yuzuha. Importantly, Hakkai thinks that killing Taiju is Yuzuha’s sole chance at freedom, even if it means risking his life. Because he wants to alter the course of history, Takemichi makes the decision to eliminate the Black Dragon Gang and put an end to the bloodshed in Taiju. Mitsuya and Mikey also visit Yuzuha to verify that she is no longer required to collect money for the Black Dragon Gang after receiving what they believe to be an official release from Taiju. Yuzuha has stated that Hakkai is no longer obligated to undertake the task, but she is still angry at Mitsuya for pressing Hakkai to do it. Mitsuya deduces that Yuzuha may have had a secret she was not ready to share with him.
Takemichi and Chifuyu revealed their plans to destroy the Black Dragon Gang and prevent Hakkai from killing Taiju before a meeting of Toman’s officers. But the other captains, led by Draken, turned down their plan since it would violate Mitsuya’s peace with Taiju. While the rest of the group was at the official conference, Mikey encouraged Mitsuya to go horseback riding with him. They stopped in front of a massive Christmas tree, and Mikey urged Mitsuya not to abandon him as the others had done. As soon as the officers’ conference ended, Kisaki and Hanma approached Chifuyu and Takemichi to recruit them into their scheme. Despite first rejecting Kisaki and Hanma’s help, they eventually decided to meet at a karaoke lounge to discuss things, where they eventually met a Black Dragon Gang informant. Unexpectedly, Kokonoi and two of his men showed there right before the informant was ready to reveal any information regarding Taiju. Kokonoi approached Kisaki and the others after seeing them pull the informant out. Kokonoi sees the ten thousand yen and demands that Kisaki pay one hundred thousand if he wants to learn anything about Taiju.
Kisaki gave Kokonoi money after he told him that Taiju visits a church on Christmas Eve and prays by himself. This is crucial knowledge, as Hakkai plans to murder Taiju, and the church is a perfect spot to do it since Taiju will be there alone. At the end of the episode, Kisaki, Takemichi, Chifuyu, and Hakkai banded together to launch a Christmas Eve attack on Taiju.
