Spoilers for Dragon Ball Super Chapter 89
Titled “A Rival Appears,” the next chapter finds Trunks investigating the disc he discovered during the Mount Butterfly event. A few futile efforts at circumventing the disk’s protection lead him to sneak into Bulma’s lab and utilise her computer. After much effort, he manages to bypass the safeguards and discover the larval stage of Cell’s design. He attempts to learn more about it, but a virus causes his computer to freeze, so he takes the disc out.
Meanwhile, Bulma and Bulla show up, and as they watch Trunks fix her computer, Bulma quips that Trunks is much like Vegeta when it comes to damaging her things. When Bulla fixes the computer, Bulma says she’s more skilled than Trunks was at the same age. Mai is enrolling at Blue High School, and Bulma tells Trunks that she hopes he would accompany her there on foot. Hearing this, Trunks is overjoyed and decides to accompany Mai to school. Trunks prevent his classmates from approaching Mai as they try to strike up a conversation. Because Bulma didn’t want Mai’s age to raise eyebrows among her peers, she insisted that Mai enrol in school. After being introduced by Mai, the instructor asks Trunks to help orient the new transfer student to the classroom.
Skale inquires whether she has a boyfriend, but Trunks interrupts. The instructor then brings Beta, a new transfer student, to the class and assigns Rulah to help him adjust to his new environment. We then see Trunks and his classmates playing basketball; he tries to show off his moves to Mai, but Beta steals the ball and heads for the net. Everyone is amazed by Trunk’s incredible speed as he uses it to obstruct his path. But Beta still scores, and while the other females think he’s hot, Mai is suspicious of him. Beta’s creator, Dr Hedo, is now hiding out near the port, but a close-up image of his eyes indicates that everything is being recorded and forwarded to him. Now he sees the world from Beta’s perspective. Hedo wonders if Trunks is the one who defeated them and stole the disc, but Alpha Android can only recall a man with blonde hair. Hedo bemoans the fact that the Mount Butterfly plant does not have surveillance cameras. Only that he attended Blue Hal High and possesses superpowers is known about the antagonist. Mai tells Trunks that Beta, unlike Android 18, is an android in dialogue between the two of them. Trunk realises that Beta is a buddy of the undead since he senses no life force emanating from him.
As a Saiyaman X1, Trunks worries that his true identity may never be known. Hedo gives Beta a variety of tasks to determine whether or not Trunks possesses any special abilities, but Trunks breezes through them all with ease. At this pace, Beta and Hedo are becoming increasingly frustrated, especially since Beta can answer a question asked in arithmetic class but Trunks cannot. Though it has nothing to do with the goal, Hedo feels happy about his accomplishment. Beta wants to throw some blocks at Trunks after school, and Trunks is concerned that if he ducks, Mai may get hurt. Goten suddenly appears on screen, lifting a truck in order to retrieve a tennis ball. This catches Beta’s eye, and he is now virtually certain that Goten was the one to beat Alpha Androids. Beta takes off his shirt and wears his superhero costume on Hedo’s orders, and Goten mistakes him for a cosplayer. As he continues his introduction, he says, “My name is Beta No. 1; I’m Dr Hedo’s masterpiece.” It’s getting late, Goten says, and he wants to go home, but Beta No. 1 strikes him, and Goten avoids the blows with ease. Even though everyone is watching, Goten insists on taking the fight outside the school, but Beta stops him. Beta only wants the disc back, but Goten has no idea what it is.
Trunks, in the meantime, asks Mai to carry his suitcase while he uses the restroom. Beta launches a devastating attack, leaving Goten on the defensive, but Trunks arrives to save the day, and Skale quickly identifies Saiyaman as the town’s new hero. When the Alphas realise that Goten is Saiyaman X1, Trunks hands him the morphing watch and orders him to escape. When Beta grabs Saiyaman X1, he throws him into the schoolyard, where X1 may hit Beta with a “Down Cycle Kick.” Because X1 seems so familiar to Mai, she questions whether they’ve met before. Awed by X1’s prowess and attire, Hedo tells him to utilise “that.” Then, Beta activates his Battle Jacket (which he dubs “Beta No. 2”) by pressing a button on his belt. When Beta 2 fires a missile, X1 can’t avoid it without endangering the populace, so he sends it into the ocean instead. By kicking Beta 2, X1 causes Mai to fall, which opens Trunks’ bag and allows the disc to fall out. Mai hides it again once Beta and Hedo discover it. When Beta captures Mai and Trunks goes to rescue her, Beta 2 fires missiles from his buttocks at the students; X1 destroys all of the missiles, but they keep coming. Then, to distract X1, Beta 2 cuts off his legs and flies off into the sky while clutching Mai in his top half. Hedo is taken aback to see another Saiyaman, but X2 arrives just in time to destroy the lower part of Beta 2’s body, thereby halting the missiles.
The Beta 2 Battle Jacket is obliterated by Trunks’ “Pressurized Steam: High Pressure” assault, leaving him in his underpants. Because of the red scarf X1 is wearing, Mai is reminded of Future Trunks when she falls from the sky, but he catches her just in time. Some of the pupils may have misinterpreted the positions that X1 and X2 strike as part of a movie trailer. Both X1 and X2 take flight, and Trunks returns to Mai in a hurry. As soon as he hears what she thinks about X1, Trunks is going to admit that he did it, but Goten stops him. She hopes to see him again, and Beta has gone back to the secret base in the meanwhile. Beta informs Hedo that X1 and X2 are their foes when the former requests for an autograph. Hedo finishes the chapter having built a more powerful Android and decided to steal X2’s Red Cape since he thinks it’s awesome.
