Rian Johnson’s star-studded mystery series Poker Face, for which Peacock has released the first teaser after months of big casting announcements, looks like a tonne of fun for fans of mysteries and Johnson’s Knives Out trilogy. The incredible ability to tell whether someone is lying is put to the test in each of the 10 episodes as Charlie (Natasha Lyonne) investigates a new mystery each week.
Charlie and her Plymouth Barracuda venture off across the country, and as they travel, the remarkable cast of Poker Face comes into action as they encounter unusual crimes that only Charlie can solve. The trailer, set to The Animal’s “House of the Rising Sun,” introduces Charlie Cale (Lyonne) and her unconventional lifestyle and ability to spot a lie fast. The strong ensemble cast is shown off in a number of brief vignettes that hint at the show’s potential tempo. Poker Face will likely have the same sharp, quick-paced style that has made Knives Out and, more recently, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery immediate hits with viewers thanks to Johnson’s frequent partner Bob Ducsay returning to edit certain episodes.
The puzzle master and creator of Poker Face released a statement on the voyage Charlie will soon undertake, which is shrouded in mystery. As Johnson put it: You may learn a lot about someone during dinner, so don’t discount its importance. What began as a conversation over steak frites about what makes detective shows consistently enjoyable—including the discovery of new worlds within each new setting, the introduction of guest stars playing killers & victims, &, most importantly, the presence of a scrappy protagonist you were ready to kick back with & see win—ultimately led to the creation of Charlie, the protagonist of Poker Face. Starring Lyonne and a slew of A-listers, Poker Face also features cameos from the likes of Angel Desai, Audrey Corsa, Charles Melton, Benjamin Bratt, Brandon Michael Hall, Chelsea Frei, Cherry Jones, Chlo Sevigny, Ellen Barkin, Clea DuVall, Colton Ryan, Danielle MacDonald, Dascha Polanco, Hong Chau, Jasmine Aiyana Garvin, Jameela Jamil.
The four-episode first season of Poker Face will air on Peacock on January 26, 2023.
