Harrison Ford Cast as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in MCU, Release Date & More

The addition of Harrison Ford to the MCU is perhaps one of the biggest casting coups in the history of the brand. The president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, reportedly approached the star of Indiana Jones and Star Wars to replace William Hurt as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross after Hurt’s untimely death earlier this year. Ford has been cast as Ross in a number of films, with his first appearance rumoured to be in the forthcoming Captain America: New World Order. Thunderbolts, a team-up film that debuted at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, will feature him as well.

The film’s entire cast was revealed at the time of the announcement, and it is intended to represent the culmination of the MCU’s Phase 5. Ford has joined the cast of Marvel’s largest team-up movie since Avengers: Endgame, which also stars Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah-John Kamen, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Ford has been working with Disney for quite some time now thanks to his involvement with the Indiana Jones and Star Wars franchises produced by Lucasfilms. Having softened his position against the films in the years following his appearances in the original trilogy, he returned to a galaxy far, far away 32 years later in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Then, after Carrie Fisher’s passing, he returned for a cameo in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. However, his portrayal of the courageous archaeologist Indiana Jones has long been his favourite. In the fifth instalment, set for release next year and simply named Indiana Jones, Ford will reprise the role for the last time. Ford, who is now 80 years old, is not anticipated to put a lot of physical effort into his portrayal of Ross. With the help of de-ageing technology, he will be able to play Indiana Jones, although his Marvel persona usually only sits in boardrooms and directs the action.

Since Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans left the franchise after Endgame, Marvel and Feige will be hailed as heroes for successfully recruiting Ford to the series. Thunderbolts, directed by Jake Schreier, is planned for release on July 26, 2024, while Captain America: New World Order, directed by Julius Onah, will hit cinemas on May 3, 2024.
