Do you enjoy scary stories? How about documentaries? For individuals who answered “yes” to both questions, the documentary In Search of Darkness is something they’ll like. As reported by Bloody Disgusting, the third and final instalment is now available for pre-order and features a trailer as well. In Search of Darkness III’s trailer is a five-minute journey through all the blood, guts, and gore that 80s horror had to offer, with commentary and thoughts from horror icons like Robert Englund, John Carpenter, Cassandra Peterson, and Adrienne Barbeau (Creepshow).
It’s a bit longer than your typical trailer, but it’s supposed to get folks excited for what’s to come in Part III, so bear with us. The five-hour documentary explores the lesser-known and lesser-known-to-the-public yet beloved horror masterpieces that were released directly to home video. As a fun aside, the In Search of Darkness community spent a year voting on and selecting the films featured in this third instalment. Dee Wallace (The Howling, Cujo, Critters) and returning icons like Robert Englund and Linnea Quigley and Tom Savini and Doug Bradley (The Howling) are among the 39 new actors who give interviews and anecdotes in the third and final part (the Hellraiser franchise). The documentary In Search of Darkness was a love letter to the horror genre, and its effort to support its production began on Kickstarter, where it successfully raised its target in two days.
The 2019 documentary In Search of Darkness, written and directed by David A. Weiner and executive produced by Robin Block of CreatorVC Studios, delves into the influence the horror genre had in the 1980s via the eyes of the era’s and today’s most prominent figures in the subgenre. Part 2, written and directed by Weiner and set for release in 2020, will have four hours of fresh interviews and a greater emphasis on lesser-known B-movies in the horror genre. In an interview with Forbes, Weiner said, “we [horror fans] all love these films [B-grade horror movies] for different reasons and we all acknowledge that while The Shining might be the cream of the crop, Chopping Mall still has a place in our hearts,” so it was important to him to focus on this in In Search of Darkness: Part II.
Fans of the series hope that the third instalment will bring even more of the same horror-themed treats that were included in the first two chapters. Until October 31st, you may pre-order In Search of Darkness: Part III from the website 80s Horror Doc. The physical copy is expected to ship in January 2023, while the digital release is scheduled for November 2022. Each item may be purchased separately, or the entire set can be purchased at once. The first two episodes are currently available to view in their entirety on the horror-themed streaming platform Shudder.
