Hulu has renewed The Solar Opposites for a fifth season ahead of schedule, meaning the characters may be spending more time on Earth than they had planned. This announcement was made at the New York Comic Con earlier today. The third season of the Justin Roiland animated comedy has just concluded, and the fourth is scheduled to debut in 2023. Hulu is certainly hoping to build on the series’ popularity after promoting its launch as the streaming service’s most-watched comedy debut ever. With Season 4 premiering next year, it is expected that Season 5 will be released in 2024, but neither the number of episodes nor the release date has been confirmed. Cartoons require a lot of work, so this is great news for the production crew.
The series, which Roiland and Mike McMahan devised, will air in 2020. (Star Trek: Lower Decks). Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Sean Giambrone (The Goldbergs), Mary Mack, and Roiland provide their voices for the film. Solar Opposites, according to the series synopsis, “focuses on a family of aliens (Terry (Middleditch), Korvo (Roiland), Jesse (Mack), and Yumyulack (Giambrone)) who crash land on Earth and are stuck there, sometimes disputing on whether or not this is a good thing. The family originated on Planet Sharp, a totalitarian utopia that, before its annihilation, sent out a hundred ships to populate other worlds.” The comedy also has a secondary plotline about people reduced in size by Yumyulack who end up living inside the wall of the Opposites.
The likes of Tiffany Haddish, Rainn Wilson, Sterling K. Brown, and Alfred Molina have all appeared as guests on the show. More recently, a Halloween-themed episode titled A Sinister Halloween Scary Solar Opposites Special debuted on Hulu. The Disney-owned streaming service has long excelled in animated programming, and the upcoming release of a Futurama remake including the return of the original cast, along with Roiland’s executive producer role on Koala Man, is more evidence of this. Hugh Jackman, Sarah Snook, Jemaine Clement, and Miranda Otto will be featured in the second season.
Hulu not only features new series but also complete seasons of popular shows like King of the Hill, Family Guy, and Bob’s Burgers. Although Roiland’s reputation rests mostly on his work on Rick and Morty for Adult Swim, his side project Solar Opposites has made quite a name for itself in its own right. Hulu’s early success with Solar Opposites led to an instant order for two seasons when the show was greenlit. The unique animation style that has come to be associated with Roiland is present in both Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites.
The fourth season of Solar Opposites will air sometime in 2019.
Right now, Hulu is the only place to see the entire series.
