The film Spider & Jessie will feature Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) and Jesse Williams (Grey’s Anatomy). Dan Kay, who authored the scripts for Pierce Brosnan’s 2016 feature I.T. and Nicolas Cage’s 2015 film Pay The Ghost, will direct the picture, which also stars Where The Crawdads Sing’s Jojo Regina. Deadline reports that the film would follow Spider and Jessie, two sisters who receive the devastating news that their mother has overdosed. Worried that they would be separated in the foster care system, they make desperate efforts to hide her body.
But as other people begin asking about their mother, the girls must decide how far they are ready to go to protect themselves and each other from the authorities. Grace from The Handmaid’s Tale will play Spider, and Regina from The Chosen will play Jessie. Williams’ present status is unclear. Grace expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to participate in a tale that delves into the truths behind addiction and its effects on loved ones in a statement. “I was aware of how widespread drug use and addiction was, but in producing this film, I’ve acquired a greater knowledge of exactly how large an issue it is,” Grace remarked. It’s tragic, but many of our own actors and staff have spoken out about their own personal experiences. Making a film like this is about more than simply telling a story; it’s about contributing to and contributing to something greater than ourselves.
Director and co-writer Kay (who worked with Julia Keller on the script) discussed the “firsthand” effects of addiction on his own family. This tragedy, he continued, “about opioid orphans,” was necessary because of the “collateral harm” that addiction causes. Joining Grace, Williams, and Regina will be Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant), Malia Baker (Are You Afraid of the Dark? ), Fernanda Andrade (Moon Knight), Dacre Montgomery (Elvis), and Regina Hall (The Secret Life of the American Teenager). Grace, who has been nominated for an Emmy, has a new movie out. This announcement comes only days before her major role in Friend of the Family, Peacock’s terrifying true-crime series about the kidnapping of Jan Broberg by Robert Berchtold.
There is currently no set date for the release of Spider & Jessie.
