Many people are looking forward to seeing Elle Wood again in Legally Blonde 3. The chic sorority lady who accompanied her boyfriend Warner to Harvard Law School was first seen on screen in the 2001 film adaptation of Amanda Brown’s book. After the success of the first film, which starred Reese Witherspoon, a sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003), and a spin-off, Legally Blondes (2009), both released directly to DVD, established the film as the start of a franchise. With the success of the first two films in mind, Witherspoon said in 2018 that negotiations are underway for a third instalment starring her as the title character. Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor were hired to write the script two years later.
Despite the lack of new information on the film’s cast or narrative, several of the original cast members have shown interest in reprising their roles. Selma Blair, who portrayed Vivian Kensington in the original 2001 film, has indicated an interest in returning for the impending third instalment. The actor gushed over the original classic to Entertainment Tonight, calling it “a delight” and “a technicolour classic now.”
She went on to praise Witherspoon for her dedication to accurately portraying the plot and its people. “Reese is really into it, you know, she loves her fans and she loves that movie and it’s so much fun,” Blair said. She said how nostalgic it was to see Maverick in Top Gun: Maverick, and I thought to myself, “We need to remake Legally Blonde.” Witherspoon has stated that she was motivated to make Legally Blonde 3 the “correct way” because of the franchise’s success under Tom Cruise’s leadership. She said that she “liked the nostalgia piece they included in it,” and she lauded the Top Gun crew for waiting so long to remake the film. If Witherspoon puts in as much time and thought as she is, the future film will be fantastic. Blair has “no idea” if her character will be included, but she is “putting it out there” in the world anyhow.
There is no confirmed date for the release of Legally Blonde 3.
