It’s been a long time coming, but praise be to the heavenly monarch, the Sister Act sequel is finally moving forward. The multitalented Whoopi Goldberg gave an encouraging Sister Act 3 update during a recent interview with Perri Nemiroff about her part in the forthcoming historical drama Till. On a recent appearance on The View, Goldberg stated that she is still interested in filming the project and that she would like to reunite with her original co-star, Jennifer Lewis of Black-ish. Nemiroff used the chance to ask Goldberg about the impending Disney+ film during their conversation. Not much was revealed, although Goldberg did state, “I’m waiting for the screenplay at the end of the month.”
Tyler Perry, who also serves as a director and actor, created the script and recently addressed Sister Act 3’s delayed start by saying they are “just trying to get everybody moving in the right manner to get it going” on The View. If Goldberg’s latest report is accurate, it appears that this is really the case. Goldberg featured in both 1992 original and 1993’s Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. In 2020, Disney claimed that they will be adding a third feature to their ever-expanding entertainment docket, but little has been heard regarding the third instalment in the franchise since then.
In the first film, Goldberg played Las Vegas lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier, who was forced into witness protection in a dilapidated convent after witnessing her mafia boss lover (Harvey Keitel) murder, someone. Deloris finds her place as she fights for acceptance in the convent and finds common ground with Mother Superior (Maggie Smith) in revitalising the church’s stale choir. Despite Mother Superior’s disapproval of Deloris’ more modern tastes, her efforts with the choir have brought the church and the area renewed attention on a national scale, which isn’t exactly in line with the witness protection programme.
For the sequel, the nuns invited Deloris back to teach music at a nearby Catholic school and assist the disadvantaged youngsters to find themselves, and Goldberg and Smith reprised their roles, along with Kathy Najimi and Wendy Makkena. Lauryn Hill, a legend in hip-hop, and Sheryl Lee Ralph, a recent Emmy winner, both made cameo roles in the film’s sequel. Since Goldberg just received the screenplay, we probably won’t hear anything about casting or a release date for Sister Act 3 for quite some time.
