The name Hannah Waddingham is one that many devotees hold dear. She’s fantastic in Ted Lasso, and her acting chops are formidable in general. If you don’t believe me, you can check out some of her scenes from Into the Woods when she plays the Witch. Waddingham is currently lending her allure to the Tom Jones saga. Tom Jones, adapted from Henry Fielding’s original novel, is a romantic comedy that will have its world premiere on PBS’ Masterpiece in 2023. First glimpses of Emmy winner Waddingham as Lady Bellaston and co-stars Solly McLeod (House of the Dragon) and Sophie Wilde (You Don’t Know Me) have been released.
Seeing Waddingham bring a historical piece to life is a little like a dream come true. The public first recognised her with her role as Rebecca in Ted Lasso, but she has since appeared in several more films and television shows, including Game of Thrones and Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables remake. To have her star in a Tom Jones adaption now that her audience is familiar with and fond of her work is only fitting. To see Waddingham in the role of Lady Bellaston is intriguing, and this image does a wonderful job of building up our anticipation. She’s the posing, glowing, powerful Waddingham we know and love. Isn’t a classic romantic comedy like Tom Jones just what we all need after the previous several years of gloom? It’s a feel-good tale with a charming young couple at its centre, and everyone will cheer for them to win in the end “Gwyneth Hughes, who writes and produces, made that statement. “Though written in the 18th century, Henry Fielding’s work is a dramatic rollercoaster that touches on many contemporary issues, including consent, sexual equality, and the quest for happiness.
Tom and Sophia face insurmountable challenges but ultimately succeed in returning to their respective homes and ultimately to each other. This is a wonderful new take on an old favourite, full of heart and humour. Her character on Ted Lasso has been something of a romantic lead as well, so it’s not surprising that she’s starring in a film like Tom Jones, which is, as Hughes says, the “mother of all romcoms.” The charisma that Waddingham displays in the Apple TV+ series will shine beautifully in Tom Jones, and oh my god, seeing her in this will be so amazing.
In 2023, Tom Jones will make his first appearance on Masterpiece.
