Melissa Barrera, an actress and one of Scream 6’s new stars, is at the top of our list for a celebrity tea party since she never spills too much or too little. Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who play sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter in Paramount’s new additions, recently sat together to discuss their forthcoming projects, and the Scream franchise was inevitably brought up. Asked how much time has elapsed since Scream 5 in Ghostface’s reality, Barrera was honest with the audience. Perri Nemiroff recently interviewed the actress at the Toronto International Film Festival about her leading role in Carmen. We questioned the younger generation of Ghostface’s latest victims about the impact of the move from Woodsboro to New York City.
When asked about the shift from a small-town massacre to a big-city stalker, Barrera enthusiastically predicted that the next film will be “…20 times more mortifying.” Scream’s “smartest following,” according to Barrera, is “the smartest fandom,” thus she was pleased to reveal details about the sixth instalment’s timeline with them. In an interview with Deadline, Barrera was immediately pressed on whether or not Scream 6 takes place a long time after the events of Scream 5, in which both sisters miraculously survived the savage attacks of Ghostface. She answered without hesitating, “Not at all; in fact, it’s not. That’s right on the heels of the prior one.
The time that has elapsed in Scream time is about equivalent to the time that has passed between the two movies.” If we extrapolate from the late September 2021 debut of Scream 5 to the release of the next instalment in the series, we get a tentative November release date for Scream 6. Is this a sign that our surviving group has relocated to New York City for further education? Fans of the original Scream were treated to an all-new set of victims and villains in Paramount’s 2022 revival. Located in the town of Woodsboro Wes Craven’s masterwork introduced us to part of the town’s heritage 25 years after the first Ghostface breakout launched Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) to ’90s final girl prominence.
The teenage actors were in keeping with the franchise’s meta thread, which gives each film a distinct flavour within the genre by acknowledging its status as a branch of the Main Cast and a remake. The price for the fans’ joy at returning to the horrific world was high. Sidney reluctantly returns after Ghostface (David Arquette) kills Dewey Riley (Kevin Bacon) in the fourth film. Barrera joins the cast as Tara’s older sibling, and both she and Ortega’s Tara live to fight another day. In addition to Courtney Cox’s death-defying Gale Weathers, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding’s portrayals of Randy Meeks’ niece and nephew round out the cast of the sixth film.
Other actors joining the twisted family drama include Samara Weaving, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra, and Devyn Nekoda. Hayden Panettiere, who played Kirby Reed in Scream 4 in 2011, is returning to the role, and everyone here couldn’t be happier. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who directed Ready or Not along with Weaving, helmed Scream 5 and Scream 6. Kevin Williamson, who wrote the previous three films, served as executive producer, while Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt returned from 5 to write the script. The date March 31, 2023, has been scheduled for the theatrical premiere of Scream 6.
