At the worldwide box office, four of the six Jurassic Park films have grossed over $1 billion. When it came to the Jurassic World remake trilogy that began in 2015, the newest instalment, Jurassic World: Dominion, was the capper. The film not only served to wrap off the trilogy, but also the decade-long tale that had begun with the first film directed by Steven Spielberg in 1993. Dominion may have been a financial success, but it received mixed to negative reviews from critics, who argued that the franchise had reached its endpoint.
But Colin Trevorrow, who has worked on all three World movies, has dropped hints about the franchise’s future by saying that he intentionally put aspects in the most recent movie that can establish the tone for future films in the dino-verse. In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, director Colin Trevorrow explained how he designed Dominion with a number of unresolved plot threads for future instalments of the franchise, saying, “I specifically did something different than the other films in order to change the DNA of the franchise.” One such element is the fact that in Dominion, dinosaurs now breed among humans. As if to counter the opinion that it is time for Jurassic to go extinct, Trevorrow described the franchise as “inherently unfranchisable,” but he seemed to agree that the franchise needed some new ideas to move past where it currently is, adding, “there probably should have only been one Jurassic Park – but if we’re going to do it, how can I allow them to tell stories in that world?” ”
Although familiar characters such as Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill appeared in Dominion, newcomers such as Kayla Watts (DeWanda Wise), Mamoudou Athie (Ramsay Cole), and Dichen Lachman (Soyona Santos) were also introduced. Trevorrow hints that these new characters might be expanded upon in future chapters, suggesting that there is undoubtedly enough for a sequel “more material is on the way. Trevorrow had previously discussed the possibility of taking the Jurassic franchise in an R-rated direction in an interview with Steven Weintraub, in an effort to inject some much-needed new blood into the series “It’s a fantastic science fiction idea that explains how dinosaurs and humans coexisted in the same area. The filmmaker felt that someone else should “come to us” from that location.
The franchise does have huge potential to expand on an R-rated narrative, which is appropriate for a film about the attempt of prehistoric animals to hide from the modern world. Whether or if Universal Pictures, which has maintained a PG-13 rating throughout the series, would be persuaded to switch to an R rating is an open question. No matter what it does, it seems certain that the Jurassic Park movies will continue to be a part of the series.
