Unexpectedly, Marvel Studios is adapting the Disney+ cartoon Armor Wars into a film. The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively that the decision to switch to a cinematic format occurred midway through production. The Armor Wars storyline in Marvel Comics focuses on Tony Stark’s legacy since his fantastic armour technology paved the way for several villains to acquire nuclear weapons. War Machine (Don Cheadle), Tony Stark’s best friend and fellow superhero, took the reins of the series after Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.’s) untimely demise.
In the comics, Dominique Thorne’s character, Riri Williams, is a bright adolescent who transforms into Ironheart. The extent to which Armor Wars will be adapted for the big screen is still up in the air, although both War Machine and Ironheart will make cameos in upcoming Marvel Studios movies. For starters, in November of this year, Riri will make her Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut with the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Ironheart, a show centred on the protagonist, will premiere on Disney+ in late 2023. When it comes to Cheadle’s War Machine, he plays a significant role in the forthcoming spy thriller Secret Invasion.
The film follows Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as he tracks down a gang of shapeshifting extraterrestrial Skrulls who have infiltrated the most powerful organisations on Earth. We may be facing another Civil War as paranoia causes her to turn on each other, and a clear connection between Secret Invasion and Armor Wars is anticipated. Although shifting from a series to a film format may come as a surprise, Armor Wars is still planned to include the same cast and crew. In addition to writing the script for the film, Yassir Lester, who was the showrunner, will also direct.
Since Marvel Studios currently has movie release dates planned out through 2026, the real issue is how the company plans to squeeze in Armor Wars within its already crowded theatrical schedule. In addition to the shocking announcement that Armor War would be made into a movie instead of a TV series, Ryan Reynolds also revealed that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut in Deadpool 3. Also opening in theatres on September 6, 2024, was Deadpool 3. Marvel Studios has had a fantastic start to the year, with the excitement around their vast superhero world being revitalised at the most recent San Diego Comic-Con. Every few days, the MCU drops a bombshell, proving once and for all that it has no plans of slowing down.
