Netflix revealed the title and release date of the forthcoming Alex Hawley spy thriller The Recruit, starring Noah Centineo, during this year’s Tudum event. Even better, the streamer let us catch a look at Centineo’s mysterious figure. Fans are being given a sneak peek at what’s to come in the series thanks to freshly published photographs. Centineo’s character, young CIA attorney Owen Hendricks, will have his world flipped upside down in the next series when a former agency asset threatens to leak CIA secrets unless she is exonerated of a major crime.
The new photos not only feature some of the series’ most influential characters but also hint at the drama that will fuel the show. Even though we’ve seen Owen Hendricks before, we now meet Laura Haddock’s Max, the CIA asset who sets the plot in action, and Vondie Curtis-Walter Hall’s Nyland, who we may assume is Owen Hendricks’ superior at the agency. Among the other cast members shown in the photos are Aarti Mann as Violet, Colton Dunn as Lester, and Fivel Stewart as Hannah, who may be either a romantic interest or close friend of Centineo’s character.
Kristian Bruun plays Janus Ferber, while Daniel Quincy Annoh plays Terence. Hawley, the show’s creator and showrunner, recently talked about the series and shared his reasoning for centring the tale on a recent college grad starting his first job. These days, novel approaches to storytelling are exceedingly uncommon. That holds true for the espionage genre as well. Every fictional spy hero, from Jason Bourne to James Bond, is a seasoned operator who is always the most knowledgeable and formidable member of his team. With The Recruit, however, we are introduced to the world of espionage via the eyes of a young man who has just graduated from law school and is thrust into a high-stakes case before he even has time to learn where the restrooms are.
Owen Hendricks is 24 years old. We can only dream of becoming James Bond so much, but we’ve all had that first job where we weren’t sure who to trust or what their true motivations were. Only at the CIA can such covert motives be fatal. It would be interesting to watch Centineo, who is well-known for his work on Netflix, notably in the romantic comedy genre, take on the challenging roles typical of the espionage genre. In addition to working with Hawley, Doug Liman, Gene Klein, Charlie Ebersol, David Bartis, and Adam Ciralsky, he will also be an executive producer on the show. On December 16, eight one-hour episodes of The Recruit will be available on Netflix.
