Breaking the internet with the announcement of the release date for Deadpool 3 and the confirmation that Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds yesterday officially shattered the internet. The revelation was shocking, but when Logan seemingly killed Wolverine, viewers were left wondering what it meant. Is the character getting a fresh start in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Is there going to be a new timeframe for Deadpool 3? Not to worry, Marvel fans; Reynolds and Jackman have created a video to address your concerns. So, in a sense. Fox was still a standalone studio when the first two Deadpool films were being made, therefore the Mutants were not yet part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to the chronology established by Fox, Wolverine dies while trying to save his adopted clone daughter X-23.
It’s a fitting conclusion for the popular Canadian hero and, possibly, the finest X-Men film ever. Bringing Wolverine back from the dead and into the MCU may feel strange to some. In the new video, Reynolds and Jackman explain that the events of Logan do not take place until the year 2029, hence no one is interested in adapting the story. In other words, everything that happens in Logan is still officially canon. How, though, if the MCU just disregarded the canonical order of the X-Men film franchise? In their pledge to fans, Reynolds and Jackman say they will respond to all inquiries in under a minute.
Unfortunately, the distracting background music makes it impossible to understand a word they say. We don’t know whether to be annoyed by the pair or impressed by their ingenuity; that’s some vintage Deadpool trolling. At least we can rest certain that Deadpool 3 will be just as gory as its predecessors, given that Reynolds and Jackman are now acting out a fight scene while outlining the film’s narrative. Deadpool 3 has a larger canon to poke fun at now that Disney owns Fox and has reclaimed the X-Men. But it’ll be tough for the film to explain where the Mutants fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) has been hinted at as possibly being a Mutant by Marvel Studios, however, the X-Men do not yet exist in this realm. Deadpool 3 is directed by Shawn Levy and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, with Reynolds having previously worked with Levy on Free Guy and the recently released The Adam Project on Netflix. Leslie Uggams also joins the cast of the third movie. The release date for Deadpool 3 is slated for September 6, 2024.
