The main characters of the CW’s new Supernatural prequel, The Winchesters, have been introduced several times, but now we can finally get to know the actors who will be playing them. Stars Meg Donnelly, Drake Rodger, Jojo Fleites, Demetria McKinney, Nida Khurshid, and Bianca Kajlich give viewers a glimpse inside their world in a new featurette published in anticipation of the show’s October 11 network premiere. The series will begin with Donnelly explaining what fans have known for a while: that John Winchester (Rodger) and Mary Campbell (Donnelly) met and started on their journey to become the demon-hunting family we know and love.
The standout feature of this outfit is the additional context it provides. Khurshid calls her Latika the group’s brains and a “very book smart” kid of the ’70s, while Fleites’ Carlos is ready to brawl with anyone that comes his way. McKinney’s Ada Monroe, a no-nonsense bookseller who stocks her store with titles from the paranormal and the weird, is also given a more in-depth introduction here. Kajlich’s Millie Winchester comes last. Millie, John’s mother, hopes he will continue to prosper and live a sheltered life, away from the perils of the wider, stranger world. Jensen Ackles, who will be reprising his Supernatural role as Dean Winchester and narrating the narrative, is the only recognisable person missing from the lineup of who’s who in the featurette.
Supernatural amassed a massive fanbase over the course of its 15-season run, and the reintroduction of Ackles’ character was a huge selling point, thanks to the nostalgia factor alone. Along with Glen Winter and David H. Goodman, series creators and executive producers are Ackles, his wife Daneel Ackles, and Supernatural producer and writer Robbie Thompson. In keeping with their promise to be faithful to the canon established by the original series, the three have set out to write an episode that will do justice to the legacy of the Winchester brothers. Several other Supernatural stories, notably The Men of Letters, will have their origins revealed as well, as shown in the latest teaser, which takes viewers back to 1972 to see the first meeting of Vietnam War veteran John and demon hunter Mary.
